When a fandom shrinks does it seem like only the gatekeepers remain?

When a group is past its peak level of interest and the fandom whithers away to just a small handful of people in a certain space, why does it seem that those who remain in the fandom appear to be preachy, uninformed and like to shut down discussion about the group
