*This thread is dedicated for Tohoshinki (TVXQ) and focuses on their Japanese discography and 5 member formation because i prefer when they were a full group.
TVXQ (ๆฑๆน็ฅ่ตท) is a J-Pop & K-Pop boy group formed under SM Entertainment. Originally a 5 member boy group that consisted of members Hero Jaejoong, U-Know Yunho, Micky Yoochun, Xiah Junsu and Max Changmin. Under Avex, TVXQ entered the Japanese market for the first time with their first Japanese album 'Heart, Mind and Soul' (2006) but was met with limited success. It wasn't until the release of their fourth Japanese album 'The Secret Code' (2009) that the group gained commercial success and widespread media attention in Japan making them one of the pioneers of Korean acts successfully penetrating the Japanese music market. Shortly after, the group was involved in legal turmoil and internal conflict when 3 members (Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu) attempted to split from SM Entertainment and its slave contracts. After a year-long hiatus, TVXQ returned as a duo and Yunho & Changmin still promote TVXQ to this day as a duo. The other 3 members were blacklisted from appearing on South Korean TV and subsequentially formed their own boy group called 'JYJ' in 2010.
Here is a timeline of the members' in TVXQ:
Here is a compilation of TVXQ's career in Japan:
Inspired by the success of their company senior BoA's music career in Japan, TVXQ signed with Avex Group in late 2004. In November 2004, they released an English version of their debut song 'Hug' in Japan which failed to gain momentum. They re-introduced themselves as ๆฑๆน็ฅ่ตท (Tohoshinki) for the Japanese market, all the members also learned Japanese and moved to Japan for their first official Japanese single 'Stay with Me Tonight' which was released in April 2005. The single reached to number 37 on the Weekly Oricon Singles Chart. In July 2005 they released their second Japanese single 'Somebody to Love' which peaked at number 14. Unlike what their management hoped, TVXQ's debut in Japan was not as successful and the members describe the first few months in Japan as 'difficult'. In August 2005, the group performed at A-Nation summer concert tour, their first musical festival in Japan. TVXQ ended the year with the release of their 3rd Japanese single 'My Destiny'.
On March 2006, TVXQ released their 4th Japanese single 'Asu wa Kuru Kara' which became the 17th ending song for the anime 'One Piece'. Their debut Japanese album 'Heart, Mind and Soul' came out two weeks later and debuted on the Oricon Albums Chart at number 25, selling 18,000 copies. The group also held their first Japanese tour from May to June 2006, which consisted of 11 shows that attracted an audience of 14,800. After the tour they released 2 more singles, 'Begin' and 'Sky', the latter which debuted at number 6 on the Oricon Chart making it TVXQ's first time to reach the top 10 in Japan. In November 2006, the group came out with their 8th single 'Miss You' which became their first top 3 single on the Oricon Chart.
In March 2007, TVXQ released their second Japanese album 'Five in the Black' debuting at number 10 on the Oricon Chart with nearly 27,000 copies sold on its first week. From May to June 2007, the group toured in Japan drawing in an audience of 46,600. After the tour, TVXQ released 5 more singles who all peaked in the Oricon Top 5, with their single 'Summer' peaking at number 2. In November of the same year TVXQ were featured in Kumi Koda's single 'Last Angel' which peaked at number 3 on the Oricon Chart and won 'Best Collaboration Video' at Japan's MTV Video Music Awards. By the end of 2007, it was clear TVXQ has cemented themselves as one of the top boy groups in Japan.
On January 15, 2008, TVXQ released their 16th Japanese single 'Purple Line' which became their first single to debut at number 1 on Oricon. Their 3rd Japanese album 'T' came out a week later and debuted at number 4, selling over 52,000 copies. From then on, TVXQ put more focus on promoting more in Japan and from February to March 2008, they released five singles back to back. Each single contained a solo track by a member as well as some of their own compositions. And with that, the group toured around Japan from March to May 2008 which consisted of 17 shows and an audience of 150,000 people, more than three times the size of their previous tour. The tour's DVD, released in August of the same year, sold 112,000 copies. 'T' also received a gold certification by RIAJ in May 2008. TVXQ's single 'Sennen Koi Uta' was used as the opening theme for the K-Drama 'The Legend' when it aired in Japan. Despite the drama's disappointing ratings, TVXQ's single was a number-one seller, making them the first non-Japanese Asian performer after 24 years to release two #1 singles in Japan. In July 2008, TVXQ released their 23rd single 'Doshite Kimi o Suki ni Natte Shimattandaro?', their third #1 single in Japan. In October 2008, they released the Japanese version of their single 'Mirotic', which once again topped the Oricon Chart. That same year, TVXQ became the first Korean group to be invited to 'Kohaku Uta Gassen' which is considered as one of the biggest highlights of their Japanese music career.
In January 2009, TVXQ released their 25th Japanese single 'Bolero/Kiss the Baby Sky/Wasurenaide which became yet another #1 single for the group. In March 2009, they released their 4th Japanese album 'The Secret Code' which debuted at number 2 on Oricon. It managed to sell over 317,000 copies in Japan, earning a platinum certification. From May to July, TVXQ went on their 4th Japanese tour which consisted of 21 shows to an audience of 279,500 people. The last two shows of the tour were at the Tokyo Dome, making TVXQ the first Korean group to perform at the venue. The concert's DVD sold more than 353,000 copies, which made TVXQ the first foreign artist in 24 years to peak at first place on Oricon's DVD rankings.
From July 2009 and onwards the group went through a series of lawsuits and internal conflicts which resulted in the group's split up, where 3 members left and all remained was a duo. However, Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu still continued with the group's activities under Avex's management and TVXQ continued to release new Japanese singles as a 5 member group until early 2010. The group's last performance together was on December 31, 2009 at the 60th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen where they performed their 26th Japanese single 'Stand by U'.
TVXQ's official fanclub in Japan is called 'Bigeast' and their fandom color is red.
