The President's Office announced in a press notice on 31 March, "We would like to inform you that the performances being reported in the media are not on the schedule of the President's visit to the United States." It appears that the girl group BLACKPINK, which caused the resignation of National Security Chief Kim Sung-han, performed at the ROK-US summit dinner eventually.
The "performance being reported in the media" revealed by the President's Office appears to refer to the joint performance of BLACKPINK and American singer Lady Gaga proposed by the US White House to the South Korean President's Office.
US President Joe Biden and Mrs. Jill Biden reportedly proposed a joint performance by BLACKPINK and Lady Street at a state dinner with President Yoon Seok-yeol and his wife on April 4. Despite repeated proposals from the US side, the National Security Office did not report the matter to President Yun, and President Yun reportedly strongly rebuked the diplomatic and security lines after learning about it through other channels. The omission of the report eventually led to the resignation of the security chief following the appointment of the protocol secretary and foreign affairs secretary in the president's office.
After the omission of the report was reported in the media, Chief Kim resigned abruptly on 26 March, saying, "I hope that the controversy caused by me will no longer be a burden on diplomacy and the administration of state affairs." The President's Office also did not deny the omission of reporting Kim's joint performance of BLACKPINK and Lady Family at a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office the day before.
YG, BLACKPINK's label, said in a phone call that day, "We received a proposal (from the president's office) and reviewed it," adding, "There has been no progress since."
