Trailer for those who don't know of the film:
It's such an interesting film and some scenes are sooo visually striking, THE DETAILS (it's def one of those films where you have to pay attention!) and mix of genre/tones are excellent.
Have you seen it and what are your thoughts? Did you like it?
I watched it on Netflix.
I really enjoyed it. It was thought provoking and definitely sticks to you afterwards. Not many films like this are being made so much now a days. My thoughts as I watched the film - contains plot spoilers:
- I was surprised by the comedic scenes as well as some really unnerving scenes too, especially that ant scene. The cinematography and direction are amazing though.
- Director Park's using 'eyes' and 'sight/vision' symbolically and its ties to the 'truth' is so fascinating - can we trust what we think we see? How much does our bias really interfere at how we 'see' things?
- The 'layers' of the story, its characters, and how nothing is or could be as it seems - really brilliant. Like our main character is a police detective, but he isn't really good at his job or useful to his team in this story and he's totally biased and unobjective in his work. Our other main character is a beaten wife and caregiver nurse to the elderly but there are hints that she's not innocent through out the film.
- It is a bit creepy how Detective HJ is so quickly obsessed with SR. I laughed and shouted 'of course!' re him getting her the 'expensive' sushi while refusing earlier for his own wife. Ugh cheaters - so transparent!
- The bit where he says he sees himself in her. Is it vice versa? Is there always a tint of 'ego' mania in these kinds of affairs?
- As the film goes on, SR is totally into Detective HJ too. So it's a bit obsessive between the two of them and it's spiraling into a very dark affair. The confrontation scene between the two of them is great.
- Oh it's a now kinda terrifying that his insomnia is due to his own issues re unresolved cases and the link to his professional career when we have just witness him being a complete fool and letting SR go and helping her cover-up etc.
- OH A TIME JUMP! Unexpected~ and OMG she is now stalking HJ and hasn't gotten over the affair. Oh ====> she's on to 2nd husband and the market run-in scene was also great.
- OMG the conversation after the 2nd husband was killed...hmmm did she do on this on purpose?
- IRL, isn't there a procedure where police detective should excuse themselves from investigations if there are personal connections or linkages such as past cases? hmmm again, he's being unprofessional AGAIN
- Ok at least this time, he is being a bit more objective in the investigation since he knows
- Ohh the scene of the handcuff...why do I feel like it's a bad omen?
- Finally wife gets a clue and I suspect it's SR who called her and not the husband
- The snowy mountain scene and ending - woah. So she admits to also loving him and wanted to help him and yet make him to never forget her. Deep and twisted. We are left with some unresolved things, especially re our detective. Will he come clean re his role or will he forever cover it up like he has been doing?
- I knew it would be tragic but I didn't think she would do what she did but now the title makes 100% sense and water was always hinted. She made her decision to leave and it parallels his wife leaving too.
