Consumers boycott Synnara Record after links to cult revealed

  • Summary:

"K-pop consumers are boycotting local album seller Synnara Record after a Netflix documentary revealed that it was founded by Kim Gi-sun, the leader of a cult known as Agadongsan, or Baby Garden.

The connection between Kim and Synnara was highlighted during an episode of Netflix's 8-part docuseries titled "In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal" released on March 3. The series sheds light on some of the most controversial religious cults that have existed, or still continue to exist, in Korea.

Founded in 1982, Synnara Record has a heavy presence in the K-pop industry as an offline music seller franchise based in Hongdae, western Seoul. It also runs an online store that ships to international K-pop fans and organizes multiple fan meet-and-greet events for K-pop artists and idols."

I watched this documentary on Netflix recently and it was sooooooooo beyond disturbing, especially this cult where the founder created Synnara Record. I didn't know about any of this so I'm thinking many non-Korean fans may be unaware too. The cult is still active etc. Please take care to check if your KPOP purchase is tied to this company.

Warning - this docuseries is a VERY hard series to watch: there's violence, sexual exploitation/rape, child abuse, and just very disturbing.

  • To add: cult members are still in the higher positions of this company and profiting. The cult has murdered several people, including a child, and still enslaves people etc.

This article summarizes the documentary and how the company still has clear ties to the cult.

  • i really don't understand how cult activity is dangerously high and in close distance with normal society in east asian countries. i can't even finish the first episode of the netflix docu

and boycotting companies linked to cult is harder than it seems because i believe they strife in politics and chaebol's companies

FYI - cults are not prevalent only in East Asian countries. There are different types of cults but the most of them use religious or spiritual beliefs to recruit vulnerable people etc. Scientology is also considered a cult and it’s active even now in Hollywood and the West.

This is an incomplete list but some famous cults still in existence:

Agreed that it is very very hard sometimes to see who all is involved. However, for this case, the link is clear and no KPOP fan should be supporting this company.

  • Ah okay i forget scientology and that one church justin bieber famously followed is accused as a cult as well
