How expensive is rent in Los Angeles?

I might be moving there soon in a year or two for my masters degree but my family has warned me that it's an expensive place. Is it really that bad over there? Would a salary around $50-100k lpa be enough to afford a 1bhk flat for rent along with general expenses?

I don't know. I am a home buyer. I have a mortgage. It's about $1700 a month but my parents helped me with the down payment. Recently a house in our neighborhood was putting a house up for rent at about $4000 a month. I'm glad I don't rent even though I have to pay property tax and home owner's insurance. The homes in this neighborhood are single family 3-4 bedrooms on average with no HOA or Mello-Roos. In my opinion you need to make at least $80K if you live alone.
