K-pop is such a weird side of the music industry. These people turn around and criticize the industry for treating idols as disposable property instead of artists without ever acknowledging that they are 100% playing into that with their behavior.

the obvious answer is certainly "no it's not fair to ridicule something because it doesn't target the taste of a broader audience" but then again who determines what's fair and not?
