EXO-SC - What a Life



  • I. Introduction

    What a Life is the debut mini album by EXO's second sub-unit EXO-SC. It was released on July 22, 2019, including the title track "What a Life."


    II. Background & Release

    On July 12, it was revealed the EP would feature six songs, including three singles, and would be produced by Dynamic Duo's Gaeko and Devine Channel. Chanyeol and Sehun participated in writing and producing the album, with a message for youth.


    The album's three singles include: "What a Life," "Just Us 2" and "Closer to You." "What a Life" is described as a hip hop track with a "unique" plucking sound and lyrics containing a message of both working and playing happily. "Just Us 2" is a hip hop song featuring piano instrumentation, soft synthesizers and a melodious chorus, with lyrics about vacationing in a hot summer spot. The track features rapper Gaeko and was composed by the South Korean artist Gray. The lyrics of the song were written by Boi B, Chanyeol and Sehun. "Closer to You" is a hip hop R&B song with romantic sensibility. It features an emotional melody and a "highly addictive" chorus, with lyrics expressing the desire to be closer to a person. Chanyeol and Sehun participated in writing the lyrics with hip hop group Rhythm Power member Hangzoo.


    To launch the EP, EXO-SC held a showcase for the press. They had also previously performed "What a Life" and "Closer to You" on EXO's EXO Planet #5 - The EXplOration tour.

    VI. Reception

    What a Life reached #1 on the Korean Gaon Album Charts and #8 on the Billboard US World Albums chart. IT also reached #10 on the US Top Heatseekers and #32 on Independent Albums. On QQ Music exceeded 1M yuan, and it received a Platinum record certification. It also charted in Japan, France, Poland and the U.K. The album also sold a total of 419k+ copies in South Korea and was certified Platinum.


    All of the songs on the album charted on Gaon.

    VII. Awards

    The album won the Golden Disc Awards Disc Bonsang in 2020.
