Is there something that you spent your last money on, but it turned out to be completely useless?

I want a car for a long time. But so far I have collected money only for a car with run, and something quite simple. But I know absolutely nothing about parts and other technical characteristics. Friends say I'll be sold a tin can on wheels and I need to save up for a car from the showroom. Did you buy a car? What did you check and how? And is it worth buying a used car at all?

Are there any sound engineers or amateurs here who can give advice? I'm just learning. What mistakes should be avoided? Any tips for beginners?
