I. Introduction
"Fireflies" is a digital single from the NCT sub-unit, NCT Dream. It was released as part of the group's role as global ambassador for the World Scout Foundation on July 15, 2019.
II. Background & Release
NCT Dream was announced as the first global ambassador for the World Scout Foundation on July 11, 2019. The group had previously been selected as one of Time Magazine's 25 Most Influential Teens of 2018 and as 21 Under 21 2018: Music's Next Generation by Billboard USA. As part of their appointment, the group participated in philanthropic activities, as well releasing a special English-language single "Fireflies," with a share of the profits used to benefit local Scout activities in underprivileged communities. The song was released on July 15, then performed at the international Scout convention, the 24th World Scout Jamboree, on July 23.
The song was described as "a catchy uptempo electro dance pop" with "a positive message of light up the world together, perfect to capture NCT Dream's sparkling energy." The group released a special MV for the song for its 3rd anniversary on the NCT Music YouTube channel with footage of the group at the 24th World Scout Jamboree. The song was also performed during NCT Dream's concert tour, The Dream Show.
