Namie Amuro - Style

  • I. Introduction

STYLE is the fifth studio album released by Namie Amuro. This is her first album released without any production from Komuro Tetsuya and his team, and her last release with American producer Dallas Austin. It is also Amuro's first full length Urban contemporary record. She had previously recorded hip-hop music with SUITE CHIC, who's debut album WHEN POP HITS THE FAN was released ten months earlier. STYLE is primarily made up of hip-hop and R&B influenced pop music and she would later coin the term "Hip-Pop". The song "Namie's Style" is her first work with her one of her future frequent collaborators T.Kura and michico (she also translated the Austin-produced tracks "Put 'Em Up" and "SO CRAZY"). The album does contain a couple electronic pop songs such as "Come" and "As Good As".

Another thing about the album is that it contains several cover songs. "Indy Lady" features rapper ZEEBRA (who Amuro would record several other songs with) is a cover of Toni Estes' "Independent Woman" which features Lil Zane. The songs "Wishing On The Same Star" and "As Good As" were originally record by American freestyle music singer Keedy. The electro-pop song "Come" was originally "Come My Way" performed by Australian singer, model and actress Sophie Monk on her sole album Calendar Girl, which was released just a few months prior to STYLE.
