They operate on delusion, identity politics and populism. Erdogan himself has painted an image and attended a cult personality figure amongst many of his voters, he uses this image as a shield against dissent.
You have the whole corruption scandals, authoritarian regime that manipulates media and controls journalists to prevent legitimate criticism that would damage their image. They also seem very predatory to me in politics and look for their own first, as in family not voters.
Of course plenty of AKP voters giving into this whole delusion and conspiracy train and defending Erdogan as if he is their family member or even treating him like a prophet. Although this is not limited to AKP voters, Turks (and Kurds) in general tend to create a cult of personality after an ideology.
