Scientists don't use the term "theory" the same way the lay people do lol. Theory in science is a explanation/statement that is backed by evidence across multiple disciplines (i.e. Newton's theory of relativity, endosymbiotic theory). Theory as you say it just means any old BS anyone wants to believe. Equating the two is harmful to say the least.
