Non-issue on playing the songs. Total issue in BTS being the scapegoats for racism and sexism. They shouldn’t even conduct the poll in the first if they are gg to play all the songs. Also they could have intervened when BTS were being subjected to horrible horrible things but no, they used the situation for the hype and when all the shit was over, they said they were gg to play all the songs
Not all songs
They did two polls and played the top two from each
Harry and The Weeknd placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the other poll and both were added to the final list
It was the same at Fifa a few years ago
They were clearly trying to capitalise off the fandoms though, which isn't surprisingAlso not surprised at the lack of intervention, not that it would have stopped fans from making vile comments

The frustrating thing is that while English is associated with Whiteness, a lot of us who are native English speakers aren't White. We got colonized or kidnapped. So when people hate English language music because of its association with Whiteness, they're erasing BIPOC English speakers completely and that's extremely annoying. English speakers are not a monolith. If folks could remember that, they might not reject the music so strongly. Maybe.
White people created and spread the language so that's where that association comes from. It's not that people are unaware that there are many non white speakers now.
I oversimplified that observation. The context in which English language songs were released by Kpop artists is the key point. English language music is not hated in general, all I've seen on that end is some poc army talk about how it's a poor language for poetic expression compared to others. And I've noticed that some fans are annoyed seeing white people credited on kpop albums too but it doesn't matter in the end if they end up liking the song. Some people complain about everything.
Fans will get used to English singles just like how they got used to Japanese releases and promo. BTS proved they can be extremely profitable so they're not going anywhere.
In BTS' case, the fear was that English songs would limit the rap line. The rappers infuse the message and the personality into the lyrics, two things we consider to be BTS' strengths, and they won't be able to do that in English as well as they do in Korean.
It's also much easier to recognise cheesy/bad lyrics when you're really familiar with the language. That's another reason why I think people are wary of full English songs.
Then there are people who just think that if they wanted to listen to English music, they would listen to English speaking artists and they prefer how Kpop sounds in Korean, which is fair enough.

... but when they release an english song then suddenly it's a huge problem, they are pandering to americans, they are selling out and losing their korean roots?
English songs have the highest potential for success as the most spoken and in demand language in the world. It is a part of the hegemonic culture, the one that other cultures are fighting against.
From a technical perspective, as cynical as it may sound, it does fit the definition of selling out (although kpop was always supposed to be a tool for Korea's economic advancement)
Japan and China are neighbouring countries to Korea and are very culturally similar so it is expected for them to be the main international markets.
The US is the no.1 market in the world, an English speaking country, and is not deeply connected to Korea the way these Asian countries are, so it is assumed that an artist singing in English (which they may not be fluent in) and promoting there with the intention of "making it" is pandering to Americans for money and recognition.
I'll be honest, anything associated with whiteness, in the current sentiment, is considered bad
It is much more complicated than people just hating on an individual kpop group.

I've seen so many fans crying about BTS being #1 again.
And yet all I can think of is that there is plenty of US artists with a fanbase just as big - if not bigger - than BTS. The only reason these fans don't buy is because they embraced the streaming culture, and they don't feel the need to support their artists in any way, beside giving them a few streams on Spotify and AM.
For now, it's only BTS wiping the floor with them, but considering how dead the sales are in the US, I don't think it's impossible that we see more and more kpop groups with actual support from their fanbase challenging GP-darlings. I wonder if western fans will finally wake the fuck up and start putting their money where their mouth is ?
It would sure be interesting, and definitely good for artists.
What do you all think ?
Why would they?
They haven't been given enough of a reason to spend their money on physical copies.
Their artists don't build the same type of relationship with their fans as kpop artists do.
They also seem to have less opportunities to promote in their country. They don't have things like weekly music shows.
Their albums on average don't have as many versions and their groups don't have collectible individual photocards.
The fans won't change unless the industry does.
It would have to become savvier and care much more about the fan experience.
There are cultural differences at play here too.
I don't know how many american artists would even be willing to trade their lifestyle with the lifestyle of a kpop idol. Even if it meant higher sales.
They would want to put up more boundaries, understandably.
It must be exhausting to be on camera as much as BTS is and to release as much content as they do.
When do these men sleep?

Feel like I'm a judge on ANTM
Or KNTM?
Jimin is really selling those glasses and the bag well but in doing so he is hiding the suit and is hunched over a little which makes him look smaller
The fingers of his right hand could be more gracefully placed
Face is perfection! He is facing towards the light and has found his best angle, between profile and straight on
I give him a 7!

There are always going to be artists that are stronger in an area than our favs.
If I compare BTS to other (instrument playing) bands then their lyrics seem like child's play, but that doesn't mean that theirs have nothing to offer. I still have found value in them and enjoy breaking them down.
I can find better musicians outside of kpop, certainly, but kpop is more about the whole package, and that's what people like about it.
There is a contribution from every area of entertainment.
So yes, it all matters, it doesn't have to be the best of the best, but it still matters since it still will affect how we feel.
The reason why kpop lyrics matter the least to I-fans is because they might not be able to understand them.
Even so I'm sure we all have songs that we listen to in our native language that we like even if the lyrics aren't all that impressive.
If the song makes you feel something that you weren't feeling before you were listening to it then it has served the purpose.
Kpop in particular keeps everything pg and pc, and sometimes we just wanna switch that part of our brains and enjoy the innocence and the optimism.
Most of the time we listen to music to escape, is that a fair observation?

I don't think it will be country but I would love it if it was true
They like to try new things and this would certainly be new!
Country music gets too much hate

that is what antis do isnt it? they won't be stopped, even if they debut at and stay no.1 for 10 weeks they'd use army's motivations and digital sales against them, and it becomes a never ending cycle.
not being at no.1 isn't failure anyway, being called a flop is pretty much a rite of passage for all successful artists :-D
was hoping for armys to stop stressing and telling others they need to do things on Twitter, but it is what it is, if they are motivated that strongly by antis and non fans
