Plot Twist is catching up quite a bit on BYG today. Might still have a chance to reach 1 then. Can also see Fate getting close to it.
Btw it's interesting to see how similar the lenghts of the songs in the Melon top 10 are. Korean listeners really have embraced short songs now. It's becoming almost a prerequisite for success
When was the last time IU had a comeback that seemed to lack much impact. Wonder how much less it would have been as well without special appearances in MVs and features.
I'm a bit surprised that Shh... is doing the worst and is already close to dropping out of Melon top 100. I guess I expected too much from the added feat of a newjeans member. Perhaps the fact that it's a collab is what puts off IU stans from listening to it as much as they are to for example I stan U; a song that IU stans can identify more with.
But It's really hard to judge in the current situation how artists are charting, though I also can't deny I was expecting much more from IU. Love Wins All for example is already losing so many uls on a week to week basis that it might not be able to surpass To. X and Rhapsody of Sadness' cumulative uls on Melon this year. I for sure was expecting it to at least end up at 2 on the year end chart but that seems unlikely now. Bibi is also catching up on LWA's cumulative uls with 100k uls every day.
I had to check it out.. surely it must be satire to some extent? I can maybe understand why it's popular but this is just painfully bad.
The group members are originally comedians so there definitely is a satire element to the song that targets the K-hiphop culture. However if this song becomes really popular the satire element becomes blurred. The song also attracts a lot of young men in their 10s and 20s on Melon and I'm not sure they all have a good understanding of what the k-hiphop culture that it tries to satirize even entails.
Considering how some songs recently got the 19+ label for quite insigificant things, the fact that this song has yet to receive it while its full of offensive and derogatory language shows that Melon just doesn't have a good system in place for it. It seems to depend a lot on reports from users themselves.
There's a song charting in the top 10 of youtube and rising on Melon daily that has one of the highest percentage of male listeners(70%) that I've seen lately. The song is called AK47 and is by the group Men's Tear. The group is highlighy controversial and everything about this song is iffy as well (they even made a remix of the song using eminem, 2pac and lil wayne's vocals). Surprised that this song hasn't received the 19+ label yet on Melon. It definitely needs it. This is one of the rare times I really wish that a song won't rise much higher...
I really appreciate that he does this kind of things, he shows us several times a lot of relevant data and he tries to analyze a lot of things, but honestly with the amount of data he has on his hand I always feel he could do way better analysis. I don't want to sound too rude but sometimes it seems like he checks some numbers and focus the analysis on that forgetting completely about the context like if he's a random AKP user or a Twitter kpop stan.
The fact that the Circle music awards have things such as just counting the first 30 days of charting in some of the awards, even nowadays when the system has changed completely, also shows some flaws.
Not gonna blame him after all i guess he's just doing this mainly for fun, but if we had access to all the data he has I'm pretty sure we could do something better.
I think at most it shows how the kpop industry reflects on the recent charting of popular groups. I also somehow doubt that companies themselves take in consideration the broader context, and only judge the success of their own artists on these kind of comparisons. South Korea id so focused on tech and data, but kpop companies still don't seem to place a lot of importance on the latter. They just try to see what sticks or follow the general trend.
taeyeon is not in top 5 is so weird, the song achieved high uls from dáy and keep climbing and stable then peak 6 weeks after released, out peak LS and Drama. i would say the song is very successful
Don't know if you watched the whole video but Taeyeon ranked at 7. Disclaimer should be made that it's based on the first 30 days after release, while Taeyeon's song reached its peak after that. Steve Choi also said he expected more from Taeyeon which seems a bit unfair to me. It's not 2019 anymore.
New video from Circle Charts/Komca chairman was released, reviewing the performance of female artist during the 2nd half of 2023. Always interesting to see the combined uls/streams from the domestic and worldwide music services. He is quite harsh this time on some artists. Looking at just the stats he can do that, but he does not include any context which is a bit disappointing. Would have been nice to see his take on the overall music consumption being down, but instead he only repeats how disappointed he is in the performance of multiple artist (even some who I thought did quite well).

Thought these charts were the most interesting:
Female artists with the songs that had the highest daily uls peak during the first 30 days after release (combined from the domestic platforms)
Comparing the performance of songs and albums by female artists during the 1st half of 2023 to the 2nd half of 2023 (vertical axis = album sales, horizontal axis = domestic daily uls peak)
Comparing the performance of songs and albums by female artists during the 1st half of 2023 to the 2nd half of 2023 (vertical axis = album sales, horizontal axis = worldwide daily streaming peak)
Noticed that Ive's Either Way will drop out of Melon daily top 100 sooner than Off The Record. There's not much of a difference in uls between the two, but considering the higher peak of Either Way, it looks like Off The Record is relatively speaking holding up a bit better over time.
Also there are now 7 songs with 200k+ uls charting on Melon. Not even two months ago there were only 2. This feels like more of a typical February now. So perhaps normalcy might be restored if it continues like this and we'll see multiple songs reach above 400k+ uls in the coming months. Would give those songs and artists a big advantage over earlier releases from this year for digital awards.
I think after the slow starts LSF and Gidle have actually been doing really good this year. The thing just is that everyone compares the performance of their new songs to those from 2022/2023, but the way GGs performend in those years is more like the exception than the norm. In general it is rare for artists to keep the same peak for more than 2/3 years. And with that we also tend to judge way to fast on just the performance of one song and make conclusions how that means for the reputation of an artist. Of course the overall context of when a song was released is needed as well, but artists are also allowed to have a song that just doesn't perform as well. Nothing stops them from having a big song again later on if people really like it.
And on a sidenote, there was some news about Melon/Kakao and their supposed unfair music distribution practicies. The company that has now send an official complaint to the FTC about it is revealed to be MC Mong's BPM entertainment (Be'O, Lee Mujin, Viviz). Hardly a big company, but does have some notable people involved.
Easy should have 2 more weeks of uls gains left so probably will top out at around 270-300k uls
Plot Twist close to surpassing the daily chart uls peak of Fist Snow. That would make it the biggest uls peak for a bg on Melon since Yet To Come
Also saw that Ditto won the KMA SOTY. Now joins Gangnam Style as the only two songs that have managed to win the digital daesangs at MMA, MAMA, GDA, and KMA. While I think KMA isn't near as relevant as some make it out to be, it's still no small feat to sweep all the digital daesangs.
Looking at how high Bibi is going though, I really want to see how the charts will be in April-May and during the summer, to at least start guessing which situation is more normal, the one we had in the last quarter of last year with songs peaking at 250k, or what we have now with the #1 being able to cross 300k and even more, because I'd say TWS could reach it too if it was at #1 looking at how close they're getting.
Yeah Bibi now has a realistic shot at reaching 400k uls. That would be higher than Love Wins All peak uls. If that happens then perhaps its an indication that we still can return to the more normal situation. 400-500k uls would still be possible then during April-May. But it's just one song for now, we really need to see it happen with more songs soon...
Also wouldn't expect too much from the summer months, especially July and August. The Olympics are then, and artists always tend to avoid releasing something around that time because a lot of music shows go on a break for it. April-June is the period where songs should hit big uls, after that it will be difficult.
Seems like they now only removed songs with a direct UMG credit from these artist. With jungkook for example they removed half of his songs from Golden while the others without the UMG credit are still there. For all BTS and member songs the ones that only have the bighit or sony music credit still remain. Will probably apply to all the other artists as well. Though the credits might not always be accurate so some songs could still be removed later.
PLAVE's fandom is no joke. The first hour debut uls for their 4 new song were basically the same, around 15k uls. Rarely see fandoms that are so dedicated to streaming a whole album. While not as big yet, they're the closest thing to LYW's fandom right now. The music isn't that bad either. Definitely can hear that El Capitxn is heavily involved with it.
and in the meantime, Easy is close to surprassing Holssi. Top 4 seems secure for it
BYG having a very strong weekend. Gap with Love Wins All has grown to 40k uls. Might stay 1 for quite a while now. Don't really know who could challenge it any time soon BYG's youtube numbers are also really amazing. Last time a song reached such high weekly streams was Seven in July. Finally a positive sign that things might improve a bit.
However, looking at IU and LSF's songs it's not all positive yet. Holssi didn't get that much streams and ended up just below Love Wins All. Easy's weekly streams also more than halved compared to Unforgiven (both released on a Monday). The release schedule for March also doesn't look promising for the charts so we might need to wait until April when Ive and Newjeans are speculated to come back for things to improve more.
It looks like Bibi will jump to #1 this weekend finally. I wonder how high it will go next week, 350k seems pretty realistic and considering LWA didn't even reach 400k ULs it would be a lot, even though after looking everything it still looks that even LWA wasn't a crazy debut like IU used to.
Regarding Shopper and Holssi, Holssi seems to be doing better, probably helped by the trend, but anyway both are still doing meh, they're going to struggle to make it into the top 10 weekly even this first week. Ig they'll stop falling like this after the weekend though.
Bibi might be close to reaching 1 on Youtube this week as well. Could have a decent shot at getting some PAKs then.
Bibi versus IU for SOTY was not the competition I expected for this year lol. Though perhaps there will be an increase in overall uls again in the coming months that can give artists like newjeans/ive maybe even GD a chance to still challenge for SOTY. But if it really will be Bibi versus IU then it will be interesting to see what happens to the SOTY awards that take into consideration international streaming and album stats as well. IU will have better stats for that than Bibi, but it could also give an outsider a chance that doesn't have the best korean digital stats necessarily but does have the better international and album stats.
Love Wins All isn't losing as much of the uls it gained as I thought it would. Kinda doing better now than during the first days it was released. Weekend will determine if LWA can stay #1 for another week or if BYG can take over. BYG will reach 300k uls soon though. Holssi is also getting pretty close to surpassing Shopper's uls. Only a 10k gap now. While it's not a perfect comparison by any means, the performance of IU's songs this comeback feels quite similar to the last NewJeans comeback. One song that cleary stands out from the others, 1/2 songs that fall a bit behind, and then 1/2 songs doing quite well with one of them having the potential to have good/great longevity
Hard to say how much potential Easy has. Slowly gaining some uls back now but not much yet. When LSF starts doing more promo it will rise for sure, but I don't expect it to challenge for the top positions. A stable top 10 position seems the max for now.
Funny to see how after all these years got7 fans still know how to mass streams songs to the top on Genie. They seem to be one of the only ones that manage to do it after Genie's chart changes. Some things never change lol
Love Wins All now at 353k uls. Gap with BYG 70k uls. We'll see how much uls LWA will lose now and if BYG has a chance to still reach 1. On Genie BYG is close to reclaiming 1 already
The realtime score of Holssi and Shopper are also very close to each other. Will be interesting to see which one holds up better.
Well it's hard to say with how the charts are nowadays but IU's comeback, Shopper mainly, is doing worse than I expected. Just comparing it with the songs that are currently on top, if it lands on 280-300k ULs which is what it seems it would be around the peak of what the #1 songs used to get in general these last months.
Comparing it with before the ULs dropped last year, it's like if she was debuting with 500-600k ULs instead of the 800k+ that she could do in 2021, far above the peaks of the other songs.
Obviously this comparison might not even mean anything because it might not apply directly like that, the fact that the song won't be able to reach #1 and other things could be causing this too, but in general it just looks that it's going to be by far the best debut in a long time, but not the "goddess" level debut she got us used to.
What seems like an important factor to consider as well is that there are two title tracks. Holssi namely isn't that far behind Shopper's uls. The early MV release for Holssi seems to have helped it quite a bit. This also makes me wonder how much Love Wins All uls on Melon were boosted by the MV release before it. We assume it caused the uls to be lower but perhaps in actuality it increased the anticipation for it and the uls as a result, just as happened now with Holssi.

First hour uls is about what i expected, was thinking around 45k
Going away for a while, so i'll do something i normally don't really like to do without much chart data to back it up, some predictions..
BYG is going to come out on top in the end, its currently too hot and viral even for IU i think
Shopper will do ok for an IU song, but subjectively i dont think its a song koreans will prefer over something like byg or LWA for that matter, it will do ok but be in a lower tier for her chart wise, more like red shoes/twenty three level maybe?
LWA will be IU's biggest song this year.
(Not sure what to make of Plot twist)
Either way, the charts are currently the most interesting they have been for i dont know how long
Shame i'll likely miss out on most of it
Enjoy it while it lasts

Yeah BYG was only 25k uls away from Love Wins All before IU dropped her new songs. Though LWA will probably lose quite a bit of the uls it gained today later this week. And maybe another song of IU can perform better over time.
But take care and enjoy IU's comeback! We'll miss your insights for sure.
