Did you think Mamamoo would be as successful as they are now, when they first came out?

  • I honestly didn’t tbh. They seemed like another group of very talented girls who everyone was gonna say deserves more attention, but then don’t buy/stream their stuff and let’s them die off later on

But they actually managed to keep getting bigger & bigger. I think around their 2-3rd year I was a bit stunned, cuz I was really convinced that the typical “These girls are so amazing & underrated” thing was gonna get to them too

  • It's so hard to say. I loved them from pre-debut, but Um Oh Ah Yeh unexpectedly did WAY better than their previous songs, and Hwasa took off in popularity from I Live Alone, which I'm now realizing she has been on for four years, wow.

And I look at this year's debuts and the girls who had fandoms before they even debuted just off (let's face it) looks and big promotions alone... Could Mamamoo have stood out against that? I think they have the talent, obviously, but the timing of when they came out did a lot for them too.

  • likely more...every group now is selling 100K+ albums...even nugus

The thread is about Mamamoo specifically, and whether people expected them to be as big as they are now when they first saw them during their debut era

Also if a group is selling 100K+, they’re not nugu, they’re at least mid-tier

I didn't expect it -- they were going for a really nice unique vibe w Peppermint Chocolate in particular, and their Bumkey collab. One thing they did smart was that they went to ALL the festivals they could get their hands on and became known w the college populace -- they debuted at a perfect time and I've always been really happy for them. Initially SM didn't want them on a show w RV, even though they were similar age, but then MAMAMOO blew up first, it was that astonishing. I had saved Solar's predebut audition w Whitney, and their CF song woohoo before even knowing both were MAMAMOO.
