The top 10 biggest girl groups of each generation?
-
-
-
-
there's still a long way for the 4th gen..
you can look at the 3rd gen.. before 2020, Twice was rank higher than Blackpink but now with Blackpink individual activity and their international fandom. it put them at the top of the rank..
I'll be waiting for Itzy breakthrough.... I hope JYP not letting them aside when the new girl group coming ..

So who were the 10 biggest girl groups from 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation?
Here's my try at it but not super confident
2nd gen:
3rd gen:
4th gen:
this has nothing to do with the visual competition I hosted2nd Gen:
- For me Wonder Girls/Kara/Sistar is like a 3 way tie depending on how you look at it. Wonder Girls has a higher peak, Kara has a huge Japan market, and Sistar had hit after hit they were overall more consistently popular.
- I would put Apink higher than miss A, maybe higher than f(x) too.
- After 1 - 8, honestly the last two is iffy. Could go to miss A/4minute/Girls Day/AOA/EXID
3rd Gen:
- Top 6 seems about right. If and lets say if we are counting Brave Girls as 3rd Gen because their lineup is 3rd Gen, I might put them at 7. I know it's only 1 year but honestly that 1 year itself already made Brave Girls super popular. I.O.I is in a weird place because they barely had a career long enough to judge. I know Dreamcatcher may not have any huge SK hits, but I do think they are popular enough to make it top 10?
4th Gen:
- Too early to tell
-
-
-
Honestly 3rd gen ggs it's very easy to rank the top6 but below that there isn't much.
4th gen if in order i disagree with the positions
-
isn't aespa #1 for 4th gen now. They already have the best-selling 4th gen GG album and the biggest 4th gen hit in Korea. That might change later but for now I think they are #1. Itzy is more popular outside Korea so they can also be #1 depending on how you look at it. Itzy and Aespa are bigger than izone that is placed at #1 on your list

To be fair 3rd gen for girl groups only lasted four 4 years (2014-2017) and the 4th gen has already been going for 4+ years now (2018-now). So it's not like the 4th gen is that new anymore.
And there wasn't any huge changes in 3rd gen girl groups popularity after the 4th gen began. Twice and Blackpink swapped places, Oh My Girl grew in popularity, and Momoland released Bboom Bboom. So the overall top 10 would basically be the same except with the addition of Momoland (which is debatable).

Oh forgot about Girls Day. There were too many popular 2nd gen girl groups
IOI is definitely a special case and I don't really know what to make of Brave Girls yet. Honestly I really wanted to put Dreamcatcher as one of the groups on the top 10 but I'm not sure if they're bigger than WJSN and Momoland...

really disagree with your classification of generation bc that means logically we have to be in 5th gen now lmao - after 4 years of 3rd (2014-2017) and 4 years of 4th (2018-2021). And that’s obviously absurd

I think they're getting there but Itzy still has a more solid base and more recognition. It's hard to tell

Honestly I kinda disagree with it too but the only girl groups everyone agree are 3rd gen are the ones who debuted 2014-2017. 2012-2013 are usually considered 2.5 (Exid and AOA) and most people think 4th gen started in 2018.
Never said 4th gen ended last year though. Only that it's already lasted as long as 3rd gen did.

Exactly top six 3rd gen groups were easy but after that everything got messy.
4th gen is in order but I was really unsure. Many of them just debuted or aren't that famous so it's difficult to rank them.

so if 2012-2013 can be gen 2.5 what’s stopping 2018-2019 from being considered gen 3.5 in that same vein of logic? I’m asking your opinion btw, bc twitter accounts propping up to call their faves 4th gen in order to top some achievements rankings really shouldn’t be the accepted gospel ruling of what’s sensible lol. And I really don’t think it’s sensible to apply different standards to different gens just bc other people say so 😅

....I lowkey think 2018 should be considered 3rd gen. I feel like people just decided that 2018 was 4th gen after it ended so the groups that debuted that year would count in the same category as 2019 rookies. Like people were comparing Gidle, Izone and Itzy, Skz, Ateez and TXT etc.
Like, if I remember correctly, back in 2018 no one thought it was the 4th gen
But since most people seem to consider it 4th gen I just go with it

I think top3 is what I would change for sure
Also ive above kep1er. Kep1er may have more album sales but song success wise domestic or international eleven out did. And I've sales r also good.

3rd gen was cut short by the hungry n annoying 4th gen fans, they forced the 4th gen title on us…

They did It should have lasted longer. It made no sense for it to end when it did

I stay with top 3. Everything else is too hard.
1st gen:
2nd gen:
3rd gen:
- Blackpink
- Twice
- Red Velvet
(IZONE was big too but since the activities were much shorter than Red Velvet (for given reasons) it is difficult to say. Yes Izone sold more than Red Velvet, but Red Velvet had more hit songs, sales were good and the girls were for a long time with Blackpink and Twice at the top of the active girl groups.)
4th gen:
( a little bit hard and maybe not fair, it could easily change but right now Aespa is the group with the biggest hits and sales)
-
-
I'm not sure that counts as spreading false rumors. Maybe they just misremembered or messed up the years
Saying a group became the biggest one year late isn't exactly the juiciest rumor either...

I think you should read my post again and thinking deeply LOL
I said "before 2020, Twice was rank higher than Blackpink but now with Blackpink individual activity and their international fandom....."
I'm not even saying something bad about Blackpink, why are you so sensitive? I hope you have a nice day though..

seems like the success was much more spread in the 2nd gen. while it was much more focused on a few groups in 3rd gen. so brave girls could get 8th place for 3rd gen but has no chance get near the top of 2nd gen.
can we not make the ranking after Perfekt all Kill hours?

Dreamcatcher is tied than WJSN for me.

Yes, that sounds about right. Now as for PAK hours, Brave Girls does extremely well in that metric. Here's what I found after doing a quick Google search (source)
Records by Hours (Girl Groups)
2. Twice — 197 hours
3. Refund Sisters — 130 hours
6. Bolbbalgan4 — 58 hours
7. 2NE1 — 46 hours
8. Sistar19 — 19 hours
9. I.O.I — 17 hours
10. Sistar — 11 hours
Red Velvet — 10 hours
miss A — 9 hours
Mamamoo — 5 hours
Wonder Girls — 4 hours
Aespa — 4 hours
Davichi — 1 hour

in my slightly subjetive opinion this is the best rating.
