  • Nice work.

Should probably be noted that the scoring will be heavily affected depending on when in any given year the songs were released, with songs released earlier in the year having a pretty big advantage.

As much as that's true, a song has to do well period for it to be on the year end chart. Release date can help but it's not the determining factor for overall performance.

  • You beat me to it. I wanted to do this on the weekend. I started and the same thing

    #1 is 100 points and #100 is 1 point,

But I think a better analysis would be to check measure the presence in the top 100 of the Weekly chart than the year end, so didn't proceed.

Did you note that Spring Day has beaten TTN, since TTN dropped to #102.

Yes, that's why YEC isn't that great. Better to look at Weekly chart.

Still this is a good start and the lead IU has won't be much affected

How would you do this? i'd love another project to do while I'm on school break

Needs some webcrawler..else to get 11 x 52 weeks of Gaon Top #100 would be tough.

Then by each week either look at number of songs by artist or do a similar weightage as you have done with YEC.

More data crunching can be done. But the first step is the painstaking one.

I did a simple script last weekend to scrape melon daily chart and gaon digital chart from Guysome (they have easily parseable json endpoints one can use). Unfortunately they only have data going back to the 2018.

Scraping gaon website is a bit more work, have to parse the html tables etc.

If tech solution is not possible, maybe few of us who dig data can split up by the years, pull the data and then consolidate..

oh its possible, if i have some time over this weekend ill see if i can hack something together quick.

  • A concern I have with this methodology is that it does not account for the relative dominance of songs on the Gaon yearly chart. For example:

Case 1: In one year, the first place song has 900 million Gaon points, while the second place song has 700 million Gaon points

Case 2: In another year, the first place song has 900 million Gaon points, while the second place song has 899 million Gaon points

In Case 1, the first place song was much more dominant than in Case 2. However, using the "1st place = 100 points, 2nd place = 99 points" method, the dominance of the first place song in Case 1 is effectively erased, as there will be a one point difference between the first and second place songs in both Cases.

  • Sure, any such measurement can be refined further. Relative ranking is just one of the simpler ways.

  • This is so interesting. Amazing work, Massive.

Just an observation. Seeing the number of anon threads made on the daily about Twice's performance on charts, you'd think they'd fallen into the depths of failure with no way out.

Yet, lo and behold. They're 4th overall and leading girl groups

Those anons must be re-thinking their life decisions now :pepe-notes:

  • Yea,

One way to take it into account i guess would be to award bonus points the higher the rank is, with rank 1 having the highest bonus etc. And anything out of say top 20 no bonus points.

Can't the Gaon's Warming Index be used for that?

  • I'm not going for something perfectly exact

  • Gaon data 2010 - 2021, have fun guys.

Nice work! So I'm assuming that you made some sort of script to automate the data gathering process?

Can you create a version of the file with Gaon points and download/stream numbers included?

If I find some free time next week, then I will try to get it. Do you want only positions or downloads/streams too from those few years that it was public?

  • If I find some free time next week, then I will try to get it. Do you want only positions or downloads/streams too from those few years that it was public?

So I was thinking that you could have three tabs in this new spreadsheet:

Tab 1: This would be for the Gaon points era, so from 2018 (Week 1) to present. It would basically be the same format as you have currently, but with weekly Gaon points in a new Column H.

Tab 2: This would be for downloads from 2011 (Week 12) to 2017 (Week 52). Again, a similar format as what you have, but with an additional column for number of weekly downloads.

Tab 3: This would be for streams from 2011 (Week 12) to 2017 (Week 52). Again, a similar format as what you have, but with an additional column for number of weekly streams.

Once we have these numbers in hand, I think it might be interesting to look at some trends over time!

  • why are tabs 2 and 3 not starting in 2010?
