Article: "How's it feel to be popular?" Debate over question asked by American reporter to Lee Jung Jae

    Source: Everyday Economy via Naver

    1. [+2,253, -31] I don't know if this is anything to get uncomfortable about. Even Lee Jung Jae didn't seem to mind. Just let it go with an open mind.

    2. [+1,318, -34] He did gain popularity, though. He went from 50 million people knowing him to 5 billion people, that can't be the same.

    3. [+736, -20] Well, this article title is wrong because she never asked the question "How's it feel to be popular?" and I think it's a question that's appropriate for a reporter to ask anyway... Lee Jung Jae may have been acting for 29 years but it's fine that Americans don't know him. It's not like we expect the entire world to know about Song Hae just because he's been on our TV for decades?

    4. [+212, -8] I don't know what's so problematic about this

    5. [+180, -10] Isn't this an appropriate question for an American reporter? Why so sensitive?

    6. [+40, -1] She's an American reporter, of course she's talking about his popularity in the US. It makes us look cheap if we get too mad over things like this.

    7. [+38, -3] Well, most reporters do some preliminary research before interviewing people, so it is a bit of a weird question for her to ask it. It's like she didn't do any minimum of research at all.

    8. [+25, -1] Americans are going to be more shocked if they find out who his girlfriend is...

    9. [+17, -1] All this aside, I do agree that the reporter should've done some research beforehand

    1. [+31] Look at Lee Jung Jae's eyes when he looks at her, I think any Korean would be able to recognize what he's thinking!!!!

    2. [+30] I can see why Lee Jung Jae could find the question ridiculous... but I don't think the reporter had any ill intentions or was looking down on him. Just think of it as an incident of ignorance and move on.

    3. [+27] I wonder what it feels like to get a question like this after living almost 30 years as a top star in Korea ㅋㅋ

    2. [+1] He's been a top star in Korea for decades already ㅋㅋ even his girlfriend is at the top of chaebol groups ㅎ

    4. [+24] It's even more hilarious to me because he answered her question seriously ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    5. [+17] Please just laugh it off. Reporters have been known to ask controversial questions to get exclusives and all that. Lee Jung Jae's response was well spoken and appropriate, befitting of someone with millions of international fans behind him 👏

    6. [+9] Seems like a reporter who doesn't even do basic research

    7. [+7] Perhaps Korean dramas and movies will need 10 more years of success internationally for us to stop getting questions like this

    8. [+6] The question would've been fine if it was asked by anyone else but a reporter ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ but the fact that she's a reporter makes it an issue because she didn't do any research beforehand.

    9. [+4] He has always been famous since 'Sandglass' but ok...

    10. [+1] The audacity of this reporter

    11. It's totally a question that undermines his acting career ㅡㅡ everyone in their forties remembers his scene in 'Sandglass' ㅜㅜ

  • How is it ignorant? Squid Game blew him up outside of Korea. Even in countries they haven’t heard of people are playing the games on Squid Game and dressing up as the characters. And I saw the video, people are really taking it out of context lol.

  • I mean he is popular in Korea… but that doesn’t mean that the rest of the world has to know him too… so it is a difference if you are being recognized at home or in a foreign country 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Also he didn’t looked uncomfortable and answers the questions. People should stop projecting feeling unto other people.

  • His girlfriend is Lim Se Ryung the eldest daughter of Korean food giant Daesang group and she was once married to Lee Jae Young. Lee Jae Young is the Chairman of Samsung since 2020 when his father died. So, she is basically a chaebol

Thanks you two.. so this is pure Korean gossip.. don’t think the US would be interested in this though..

  • Well, just because he was active for many years, doesn't really mean that he was popular. He wasn't part of any big kdrama/movies in the last period, like Lee Kyung Young for example, so for sure this generation barely knew him. I don't think her question is offensive at all, no one outside SK would recognize him.
