Is having a SM tag enough to make any group best vocalist of their generation

  • Kinda true but actually some idols purposely join SM with the idea of filling said position. Like Giselle from aespa and Mark from NCT, both addition to be rappers nothing more

    :whatr:

Mark had a natural talent for dancing and same for Giselle with singing, so bonus :*

Giselle and Mark actually do have talent. Mark may not be the best rapper in kpop but he's the best in SM as a whole. We haven't seen much from Giselle but from that 15 predebut sec clip itself I could say she's way better than her label's female rappers. Btw Giselle could easily be a lead vocalist in Aespa (make Winter as the main vocalist as well), so she gets a pass.

  • Not necessarily... But having the SM tag makes the good vocalists easier to spot in their generation. Coupled with most fans' lack of exposure to enough other artists, that's one of the primary reasons why SM artists get the title of "best vocalist" easily. Not to say SM vocalists are bad or undeserving of the title. But a judgement of "best" usually is subject to the speaker's exposure to the range of choices available. "Best" simply means "best of the ones I have encountered so far".

You sir have seen the light

    :angryr:

And rap in most kpop groups is a Joke in general, it's why I'm really proud aespa have two songs (one remake) with no rap! not every song needs that, sometimes trust the melody and the vocals

    :siptear:

  • so they give the rapper position to the members who don't sing as well as the others. They don't want to ruin their vocal line, so they make them rappers instead. SM never cared about rappers in the first place and degrade the rapper position as a whole.

Just because they have fewer professional rappers, it doesn't mean that they don't care about rappers.

Nct have the strongest rappers in SM and they are very good at what they do. SM would never have made Nct hip-hop based if they didn't care about rappers.

Clearly, you judge SM without knowing what you are talking about exactly.

Also, rappers don't last as long as vocalists, their careers as rappers has no longevity so it makes sense why SM focuses on vocals because vocalists can sing for life. That's why their rappers can sing too. Also Kpop is POP music not hip-hop. I don't understand the obsession with good rappers if the genre isn't hip-hop!!!

It used to be that rap was something like a third or even fourth priority for SM groups, with vocals and dance and even variety talents the focus for selection and training.

But with the latest generation of SM groups, that isn't really the case anymore: rap is being taken more seriously, and while the rap talents are still not present in abundance and top high level as the vocal and dance talents are, SM's latest rappers are solid enough.

Heck, even their dancers can sing! I mean, Ten is NCT's top dancer (and a 3rd gen top tier dancer) but he was lead vocalist in '90s Love and he sounded beautifully ^^

why do you think rappers don't last as long as vocalists? rappers can also rap for life. also if kpop doesn't need good rappers, why have rappers in the first place? also lately SM's groups have been doing more hip-hop than pop, so good rappers are also important.

sorry but rapping should be given equal importance if the song has a rap. bad rapping is no better than bad singing.

SM rappers do their job well as expected of them. You said they degrade rapping and I disagreed, if they don't think rapping is important, they wouldn't have rappers at all. However, rapping doesn't guarantee a long career like singing does. And 90% of the most successful artists are vocalists not rappers.

I don't know of any rapper who still raps in their 60s and Seventies like vocalists do. Even finding those still rapping at 50 is very rare.

Meanwhile for vocalists, Celine Dion is still going strong in her 50s.
