female Idol types categories made by me

  • First, most idols don't fit comfortably into anyone category. This is just a loose guide.

    Big Group Idols

These are idols that belong to one of the mega groups like akb48 or Nogizaka46. The type of idol you might see in these types of groups can vary greatly as their main goal is to promote themselves and stand out.

Tradols: This is a slang term for traditional idols. I think the most known amongst international fans that fit in this category are hello project idols, which include groups like Morning Musume. These idols fit the general perception of idols being cute and innocent.

Alt idols These are idols that go for an alternative image to your traditional idols and try to stand out by being different. The most famous company for these types of idols is called Wack

Chika Idols Chika is Japanese for basement, so that might give you an idea of the level we are dealing with here. These girls play to really small crowds in small clubs even basements of bars sometimes.

This is where one will find your real punk, extreme, or idols that go against traditional social norms. Most of the idols in this scene fit the alt scene, but there are some with a more traditional image

if you have any questions or comments please add below

  • my idol classification system would be:

Mainstream idols: groups or acts from medium or large companies that either follow or set the standards of the industry, they have connections with the entertainment "establishment" (major TV, radio, fashion and publicity companies), more likely than not they are part of major multimedia franchises, in general at least some members are know by the general public

Indie Idols: small acts usually coming from minor / new companies (in some cases, totally independent), their sound and image tries to emulate those of mainstream acts, any deviation from that is usually caused by a lack of resources

Alt-idols: a catch-all term for any acts that greatly deviates from the industry standard, their popularity is not relevant to this term, they are defined by their experimental / extreme / unexpected concepts, looks and behaviors

    • Acts don't need to be as big as AKB48 to be considered mainstream, mid tier groups like "Niji no Consquistador" also fit the bill
    • The difference between an indie and mainstream idol is their popularity and resources
    • Alternative / Alt idol is not a concept itself, is just a name for acts that greatly deviate from the standard
  • nothing here for now hehe (/▽\)
