Knetz criticize Celebs & Idols living in big houses: "people who live alone in nice houses without having to do anything"

  • As observational entertainment programs, which reveal the daily lives of certain celebrities, have become popular, there has been an increasing number of shows with a similar format. These days, viewers are protesting that they feel a sense of deprivation watching these programs. This is because most celebrities live in unrealistic high-priced houses while most people are suffering from soaring housing prices recently.

Currently, there is a housing crisis in Korea as many young people can't afford to buy a home. The average home price in Seoul increased by 50% from 2017 and jumped 22% from 2019 to 2020, the highest jump of any major city in Asia. The average Seoul apartment is now worth $1 million.

Jeon Hyun Moo unveiled in the latest episode has an area of 156 ㎡ (1,700 square feet). The apartment was valued at 4.49 billion KRW (3.9 million USD) at the end of last year.

Park Na Rae bought a two-floor detached house in Itaewon through an auction. The house has a lot size of 551㎡ (6,000 square feet) and a building space of 319㎡ (3,433 square feet). Five people participated in the bidding, but Park Na Rae won the auction at 5.51 billion KRW (~4.8 million USD).

In addition, MAMAMOO's Hwa Sa also shared the new luxury villa apartment she moved into, which costs around 3 billion KRW (~2.6 million USD).

With more and more celebrities revealing their luxury homes on the show, some netizens criticize that the show has become difficult for Korean citizens to empathize with. According to the introduction of 'I Live Alone,' the show's purpose is to form a social consensus through the program. It has become an era in which 4.53 million single-person households exist in Korea.

    Knetz comments:

One netizen explained, "I feel deprived while watching shows like 'I Live Alone' and 'My Little Old Boy' because I feel those shows just depict the lives of people who live alone in nice houses without having to do anything. I feel these celebrities live in luxury apartments with Han River views. Even in 'The Return of Superman,' the family living in the Han River apartments have enough time to make ends meet even if the dad doesn't have to work."

In addition, other netizens also commented, "I don't know if I want to watch celebrities boast of their billion KRW (million dollar) houses," "In the past, celebrities were shown living in small one-room apartments or a small studios and viewers were able to relate but now there aren't much we can empathize with, which is a shame."

  • So they shouldn't live in nice apartments just because you can't? If it bothers you to compare yourself to them just don't watch then

Maybe, You and i are, Destined to be once in, A thousand, Years

  • Part of the reason for property prices soaring apparently is that Korean banks are unstable, and property has been the best way to protect money. Someone on twitter ages ago had an interesting thread about how you could estimate the wealth of a Korean celebrity quite accurately by their property portfolio because they don't like to keep a lot of cash in the bank and that there could be issues with overseas investment for individuals at that time (4-5 years ago I think).

Anyway, many of the rich idols come from rich families. Living in nice places is all they've known unless they had to do a dorm stint (and I suspect trainees with wealthy parents in Seoul only stay in dorms when it's convenient, why slum it when they don't have to? It seems unnecessarily masochistic.) If someone gets eaten up by jealousy that much, they have the option to not watch the TV show...

  • I could kind of understand the netizens. In Korea there is almost a wall between the celebrities and the “normal people“. It’s like day and night. I wouldn’t hate the celebrities though.

Maybe it is similar to the celebrities who cried about staying home in their mansions while some people lost their homes due to covid or couldn‘t work.

  • This is like when people get mad at IG influencers for going to Cancun or something. Like unfollow them? Just turn off the TV. Surely that's not the only thing on it to watch ffs.

  • think they are just tired of the same old recycled variety show of following celebs around and i can understand them wanting something new but overall why not just change the channel lmao

  • netizens say this then these shows will be the ones with the highest viewer ratings

  • There's a Japanese lady who lives alone in my neighborhood. The houses here are at least 3 bedroom and in the range of 800K to 1.3M USD.

I'm not rich. I'm lower upper class. Plus I'm not in a single income household. It's not even a normal two income household. And according to my co-worker who is actually poorer than me: I live in the dumpy part of my town. She lives in n area with an HOA and crap like that.

  • This is the most ridiculous thing I've seen all week. IMO, it's similar to when fans get angry about companies releasing merch because they don't have the means to buy it and it makes them feel bad.

Knetz would've hated MTV Cribs. I enjoy looking at spacious homes even though I'll never be able to afford one. I'm not gonna get upset with the people who are able to afford it. I still have lots of things to be grateful for.

  • how to say you are rich without saying you are rich

It depends on the market. In DC that might get you an average sized house in a decent neighborhood but not anything extravagant. Just a normal house. Same with San Francisco or something, except they're even worse. So incomes might be higher but then cost of living is much higher and people end up functionally middle class or upper middle class while making six figures.

  • I'm not sure whether the cast of Return of Superman really live in their house or maybe they have another luxury house. Let's be honest here, celebrities that bought & lives in the luxury house have too much money. They earn it through hardwork & they should spend it.

Hwasa is one of the successful idols and managed to buy that luxury house and yet she is not in the top 10% richest KPOP idols. Can people imagine the top 10% total income? Do Knetz expect them to keep their money hidden forever

  • Maybe they could make the show more watchable by allowing a little variety in types of people who come on the show? I can imagine it'd be a little grating from their point of view to constantly be reminded of the huge and a little unfair class differences. Not that they have to, but maybe it'd cut down the criticism.
