I think many Kpop groups will struggle in western media(US)

  • Just my personal thought on this matter, but very few groups will be able to handle the extrovert nature of american media. BTS did very well, because them boys has always been extrovert and outgoing even before they became famous. So western markets and BTS goes hand in hand. BlackPink has been selective in appearing on western media(YG control), but it seems individually they are adapting well. Still, many groups will be in a ackward situation. Especially girl groups that are acting aegyo and cute and scared to death when a male approaches. I mean, how are they going to react if they appeared on variety shows when male MC coming at them unlike anything they experience in Korea?

Korean hosts are typically more blunt to idols so idk what exactly you're getting at and are way more likely to be in someone's personal space than a US talk show where the host is typically seated behind a desk or seated/standing to one side of the person they're interviewing.

Really the only major difference is that in the US it's more common for a host to ask about your personal life, but most of them are willing to avoid the question if they're asked because they want to keep their guests at ease.

I also don't think BTS is any more extroverted than any other kpop group, but sure.

  • To be honest, I don't think BTS do well with western media with only one of them being fluent at english. Blackpink also come of extremely awkward in western interviews.

the only thing that would make kpop groups struggle would be the language barrier, if anything western media would be easier to do as its just answering basic questions.

let us gather around for the lord’s prayer:

Nævis we love you. You are the one who protected me when i was in trouble. MY victory, one SYNK DIVE. I know your sacrifices. Let’s meet surely after the resurrection.

  • I feel like this is just revisionist thinking. That BTS did well in the west due to their personality and relationship with media, when it literally has ZERO to do with that since BTS ALREADY had a large following in the West before they started promoting here. Regardless of their personality. Depends on how hard you stan, i feel like their music was way more influential in their rise than their personality (as someone who listened to their music and they stay in my Top 5 even tho i could give two shits about the members)

As for BP, i’ve always said they should have a MUCH better time in the west, more than BTS on paper. BTS has to deal with western masculinity differences, boy group stigma, and having more members and less english skills.

BP has a more individualistic approach which would appeal to the west more since they aren’t used to groups. BTS feels like a cohesive unit/group and individuality is sometimes hard to see, while BP feels like 4 girls put together. It’s easier to learn and get to know each members niche/appeal with 4 members that are so different versus 7 who wear matching suits etc.

And like I said, most interviewers will not ask those questions if it's requested. I think Ellen is the only show that's asked this about kpop artists (which isn't surprising since she's always rude). In fact the only other one I think of is when Monsta X was asked on a radio show if a song one of them had written was based on a personal breakup.

  • I don't know how many times you've watched BTS' interviews, but they are actually pretty bad. They throw heys and aouuws and Namjoon usually answers all the questions unless Taehyung or Jungkook memorizes a few answers lol They don't understand even the simplest questions asked of them, except for Namjoon. Although Jungkook has made some progress lately, we can actually say that they are still at the beginner level. If they are told that what they say will be translated later, you can usually find that Suga and Jin are more involved. Namjoon is trying to lift the whole load, sometimes he succeeds, sometimes he fails, but he does his best, which gives them some advantage. They're all trying to do something when they can, and it's okay because armys loves every little sentence they say. :)

  • Bad or not, they try their best to answer the hosts' questions to the best of their abilities and sometimes their bloopers during interviews was what made them more endearing.

And not all interviews were awkward. This was hella funny and fun to watch.

  • Why are you acting like American hosts are all Eric Andre? For the most part they're even less invasive than Korean hosts with the exception for a few like Ellen but that's.... Ellen. I think the biggest obstacle is the language barrier and basic/boring questions (that's on the interviewer though) but I don't think idol personalities would exactly struggle during an American interview unless things got political (most likely cannot voice their opinions on that) which is unlikely.

  • BTS interviews are... not alway good.

Half of the members clearly don't want to be there, and the other half clearly don't want to be there either but manage to hide it a bit better. There are some exception ( they seem to really enjoy their time with Jimmy Fallon for example ) but yeah... that's a mess.

I think it mostly come down to US interviewers not respecting kpop idols in general. The interviewers themselves don't always seem to know what to do with them.

  • Half of BTS are introverts actually and it took them time to be respected by interviewers. These days, their interviews are more interesting but it was a bit sterotypical at the beginning. There are also more English subtitles under their interview videos so they can talk Korean if they feel more comfortable to do so.

Some female idols have natural aegyos but they also do it on Korean TV because it's kinda expected of them and a lot of times they don't do it until they are asked to. You can see that they don't want to do it too sometimes. So they won't just do it for a Western interview more likely.
