Are you a fake fan when you say something bad about your faves?

  • Sometimes I have the feeling that as soon as someone says something bad or slightly negative or something what seems to be negative about his favorite (their music or whatever), that the person is labeled as anti or fake.

I have been given this feeling lately and have felt it myself, although I haven't even said anything negative. As for me, however, the timing was not the best, so I see my mistake and apologized. That can happen too.

What do you think? Should a fan, even if he thinks negatively about something, remain silent so that he does not portray the artist in a bad light?

I don't know if I will regret this thread but I just want to know your opinion.

  • We are individuals here and a fan can opine/state ones dislike for ones fave's song.

But to write long essays about how much you disliked the song

and how you missed their old sound etc is acting like an antifan and

just giving ammo to antis who are eager to jump at BTS.

  • everyone has own taste

and for example you might not like the direction or concept that your favs are moving into

as well as for example if song is autotuned too much

or if you there for banger but they do a ballad comeback etc.

it all depends which kind of words you will use to describe what do you feel about this or that

  • We aren't sheeple. We aren't obligated to like everything from our faves. We are allowed to voice our opinion.

I, personally, feel bad joining in when the hate is heated. But it's still a valid opinion.

  • According to many gatekeepers on this forum: Yes

    :pepe-joy::pepe-joy:

I have openly criticized all of my faves music from time to time here and not only music but sometimes all their labels or stages or whatever it may..

I like to give my opinion on such things if the material/whatever thing they do is not up to the standard that I expect from that fave group of mine

  • Only fans who treat their fandoms as a cult and treat being a fan of their faves as a personality trait would think and act in that ridiculous and childish way. You're consuming your faves music and content and you're supporting their career, of course you have no business acting like you own them or like they owe you but it's well within your rights to openly and freely express your honest opinions on their music and even behaviours and actions of the idols themselves.

  • Eh.

They're not our friends or family. We don't know them personally. We are customers to a product - music.

Just because I'm a fan doesn't mean that I'm forced to like everything a group releases. This is not a dictatorship. We are free to express our opinions. No need to sound like a brainwashed person.

    BUT.

It's extremely rude to insult someone just because you don't like their work. You should voice your opinion always, good and bad, but without insulting people.

The best way to put this is to put yourselves in your group's position. It's nice to read/hear only good stuff yes, but you should be open to criticism. "The autotune is not good/I think this style is better/worse etc". But if you say something like "You sound too entitled because you're successful you only care about money now/you only care about your looks instead of music and you're ugly etc" I bet none of you would like to hear this.

Be critical, but in a constructive way.

    • Official Post

Anyone who calls you out for expressing your right to be disappointed or upset or not liking

a song/album/stage/style is probably the actual fake fan.

  • Simply criticizing your favs doesn't make you a fake fan. What makes you a fake fan is bashing your faves, saying rude and derogatory things about them especially in a space that is known to hate and find any reason to jump on your faves. What makes you a fake fan is seconding the opinion of people you know hate and despise your faves. What makes you a fake fan is you having to write an essay explaining why you're not a fake fan because of the essay you wrote bashing your "faves".

If you have to bash your faves, news flash, they're not your faves...

  • It’s ok to have negative opinions but some people wear negative opinions like a badge of honor. I want o agree that disliking something doesn’t make you a fake fan but in these discussions I always feel like I’m missing some nuance.

  • If I enter a book club dedicated to a certain book and most of the time when I take part in public discussions it's to highlight how the book lacks, then am I really a fan?

If I talk about how I don't like a book, and hardly talk about why I like and enjoy it... then why the hell would I think of myself as it's fan? No one is forcing me to like a book!

So screw anyone who says otherwise. No one can determine if you're a fake fan. You're a fan of who you choose to be a fan of! Period!

  • If it isn't offensive to the idols themselves then no. For example-saying something like the x idol can't sing, rap, dance etc is bad. But if it is something like you don't like a song then it is ok.For example-I don't like x song.

  • Others opinion won't bother you as long as you know yourself with your faves . Let's just accept that each fandom has overly sensitive fans wether we like it or not :boredr:

  • You don't have to like every single thing your faves do just cuz you're a fan and just cuz we're stans doesn't mean we give up our right to have and express our opinions. Unfortunately, gatekeepers and bullies will tell you otherwise.

I also don't agree that you can't associate with people who don't like the sane music group you like. Wth is that?

At the end of the day, it's just music. Geez.

  • No, I don't like some Red Velvet songs, and being able to distinguish the good and the bad songs (for me) makes me like more them. Feeling forced to love everything would make me confused if I really love the songs that makes me appreciate them or if I'm being biased.

  • No. But some people go beyond that and criticism goes above the level of bashing.

I mean, i am not much fan of ptd, but i wasn't writing essays after essays trashing the song and my faves. And happy for them

But some people only criticise and barely praise. Well then things become crystal clear.

  • Well I’ve disliked the last 4 comebacks of my faves but I loved the music they put out beforehand so I don’t think it makes you a fake fan, being apart of a fandom shouldn’t be like a cult where you must love and worship everything. That kind of thinking is extremely unhealthy.

  • What is something bad? Bashing.

If it's constructive criticism in the hope they improve on something you know your fave is capable of doing, then no. I didn't like PTD and said it. I let it go after those couple of times, I don't need to make it my whole personality.

Fake fans are the kinds of people who will say they're a fan of someone and then constantly talk trash about them. If you're a fan, you do your best to support them, not tear them down.

  • but in these discussions I always feel like I’m missing some nuance.

Threads like these usually stem from a prior negative interaction that OP had and they come here to talk about it.

It's not always the case, nor am I saying that OP had a bad time with someone, but response threads are very common.

  • No...not when there's a difference between constructive criticism and blatantly bashing. It can most of the time be clear which one you're doing and if you are bashing and hating an idol, then don't call yourself apart of the fandom.

There's a difference between "I think [idol] has improved on this but can maybe work on their stage presence. In respect, I don't find them as captivating as the other members on stage but I wish them the best of luck in what they do!"

And "[Idol] is so bad at their stage presence, I find them very boring and hard to watch. They should just leave the stage if they can't improve."
