For what I have seen, the best results are from initiatives that try to incorporate the local fauna and flora with some herding.
It's not just China. Lot of places are doing that not just to create barriers against desertification or reclaim land from deserts (Saudi Arabia plan is as ambitious as the Chinese one). Places in Europe have initiatives to revive their ancestral forests. South America and India as well. Lot of them are being done to revive lost water sources. Mangroves are being reintroduced as well as natural sea barriers.
Hopefully this becomes more and more the norm. We are slowly becoming true protectors of the environment. However, I fear some of the initiatives may be just political maneuvers and some of these plans will get botched. Lot of environmental disasters we made are from well intention ideas (like introducing some predator or plant that fucks the local ecosystem).
