The whole "princess of a ruined country" thing is probably because of the air of mystery and melancholy that Mina has around her. Like, elegant, but with a hidden sorrow. Not a bright and charming princess, or an arrogant and prideful princess, but a sorrowful one after the destruction of her country. Still innately noble, even though she no longer is dressed in royal finery. Maybe one day she will rally the defeated knights and common people to retake the land.

Just my interpretation, but I don't think so. There are plenty of cultural references in historical K-dramas to princesses of previous dynasties among the kingdoms of Korea who were "ruined". Particularly during the Three Kingdoms of Koreaperiod. (And it would be unlikely for Mina fans to make disparaging remarks about Japan).

Yeah, your explanation makes a whole lot more sense. My mind just went to the Korea-Japan tensions first since it's been so prevalent for a long time. And I wasn't familiar with the phrase at all.
