A review after so long.
1. Crown
This is so 2012-14 EXO coded. Like, it feels very early 2000s SMP song: the distorted guitar in the back, wobbly synth in the back and heavy atl trap influences. Melody is nice too. No wonder they chose this for the title track. I love the bossy lyrics too…. Talk your shit, EXO!!
The best part is after 2:49 in the track… they understood the assignment.
But this song has cons too. Pre-chorus is the weakest I’ve heard from EXO tile track in long time. Hook/chorus is good but it could’ve been better…
8/10
2. Back it up
My pick for the title track. PURE AND RELENTLESS ENERGY!!! Perfect pre-chorus, stronger chorus and even better post-hook verse structure… I love the “mmmh” hums in the back during the chanting part. D.O, Chanyeol, Sehun and Lay shined the brightest in this especially Lay with his high note at around 2:55 (it almost sounded like Chen)…
10/10
That brassy wobbly synth in the background is crazy!!! Gives it a unique groove. Love the Brazilian funk influences and the chorus is so vibey. Very prominent bassline. But the song goes to next in the last 35 seconds. COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED TEMPO CHANGE. if it was not for this, this would’ve been a standard EXO B-side in their “The War” album….
8.5/10
4. Suffocate
The first few seconds made me think we are getting sexier version of Playboy x Sweet Lies (I WAS SO WRONG AND SO RIGHT at the same time.) my god.. the chorus hit like a ton of bricks…
So good. Last half is especially excellent. Excellent vocal performances especially KaiSoo.
10/10
5. Moonlight Shadows
This is so dreamy and cinematic. I love the the feeling it evokes and harmonies with SeYeol and SeHo…
But at the same time, this is where the dramatic shift in the energy in the album hits the hardest because the chorus is good but it could’ve been so much more engaging…melodically and it’s way too short.
7/10
6. Back Pocket
Reminds me of UNFAIR, EXODUS ann Ya Ya Ya and funky songs in The War.
I love the falsetto in the pre-chorus (Kyungsoo sounds so good) and the chorus is so fun. I’d love to see the live performance of this. Rap is nice too.
8.75/10
7. Touch & Go
It could’ve been in EXIST and I wouldn’t notice. The weakest song on the album.
Forgettable. The guys pulls it off because they are THAT good. Love the Chanyeol’s parts though.
4.5/10
8. Flatline
A pop rock song? By EXO??? With great melody and such heartfelt lyrics. Phrasing in this so good while hook is so SUHO-coded…
9/10
9. I’m home
I’m emotional about this song. No notes.
8/10
Conclusion :-
Let’s address the elephant in the house.
Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin are not part of this comeback and I hate that with every fibre of my being… not only are they part of the coveted vocal line but two of them are MAIN VOCALISTS of the group and that has led to all the vocal heavy lifting being done by Kyungsoo and Lay with Suho. While they do commendable job to steer the album towards the astonishing quality it is at… you can’t really replace ChenBaekXi. Xiumin’s absence in harmonies and bridge is felt so much while Chen’s high notes and perfect vocals and Baekhyun’s chameleon-esque commanding presence is being missed.
It is evident in the songs due to how much negative space there is. There are sections of songs where instrumental takes forefront, while it is new and good for EXO but there’s only one reason for it. So many of chorus need a stronger backing vocals and cascading harmonies. Songs like Crown, Touch & Go are ones where ChenBaekXi would’ve take it into next level. Suffocate and Crazy’s hooks are built around instrumentals rather than melodies sung by members…
so all in whole, this is an excellent album, especially since OT6 and we have Obsession as an album to compare… but my god, we could’ve had EVERYTHING, if only things worked out better.
But in the end, EXO HAS SURVIVED AND WILL SURVIVE. I’ll be waiting for the repackage (if there is one) and hoping for all the disputes to end in the favour of wellbeing of the members and group itself.
