    A review after so long.

    1. Crown

This is so 2012-14 EXO coded. Like, it feels very early 2000s SMP song: the distorted guitar in the back, wobbly synth in the back and heavy atl trap influences. Melody is nice too. No wonder they chose this for the title track. I love the bossy lyrics too…. Talk your shit, EXO!!

The best part is after 2:49 in the track… they understood the assignment.

But this song has cons too. Pre-chorus is the weakest I’ve heard from EXO tile track in long time. Hook/chorus is good but it could’ve been better…

    8/10

    2. Back it up

My pick for the title track. PURE AND RELENTLESS ENERGY!!! Perfect pre-chorus, stronger chorus and even better post-hook verse structure… I love the “mmmh” hums in the back during the chanting part. D.O, Chanyeol, Sehun and Lay shined the brightest in this especially Lay with his high note at around 2:55 (it almost sounded like Chen)…

    10/10

    3. Crazy

That brassy wobbly synth in the background is crazy!!! Gives it a unique groove. Love the Brazilian funk influences and the chorus is so vibey. Very prominent bassline. But the song goes to next in the last 35 seconds. COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED TEMPO CHANGE. if it was not for this, this would’ve been a standard EXO B-side in their “The War” album….

    8.5/10

    4. Suffocate

The first few seconds made me think we are getting sexier version of Playboy x Sweet Lies (I WAS SO WRONG AND SO RIGHT at the same time.) my god.. the chorus hit like a ton of bricks…

So good. Last half is especially excellent. Excellent vocal performances especially KaiSoo.

    10/10

    5. Moonlight Shadows

This is so dreamy and cinematic. I love the the feeling it evokes and harmonies with SeYeol and SeHo…

But at the same time, this is where the dramatic shift in the energy in the album hits the hardest because the chorus is good but it could’ve been so much more engaging…melodically and it’s way too short.

    7/10

    6. Back Pocket

Reminds me of UNFAIR, EXODUS ann Ya Ya Ya and funky songs in The War.

I love the falsetto in the pre-chorus (Kyungsoo sounds so good) and the chorus is so fun. I’d love to see the live performance of this. Rap is nice too.

    8.75/10

    7. Touch & Go

It could’ve been in EXIST and I wouldn’t notice. The weakest song on the album.

Forgettable. The guys pulls it off because they are THAT good. Love the Chanyeol’s parts though.

    4.5/10

    8. Flatline

A pop rock song? By EXO??? With great melody and such heartfelt lyrics. Phrasing in this so good while hook is so SUHO-coded…

    9/10

    9. I’m home

I’m emotional about this song. No notes.

    8/10

    Conclusion :-

Let’s address the elephant in the house.

Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin are not part of this comeback and I hate that with every fibre of my being… not only are they part of the coveted vocal line but two of them are MAIN VOCALISTS of the group and that has led to all the vocal heavy lifting being done by Kyungsoo and Lay with Suho. While they do commendable job to steer the album towards the astonishing quality it is at… you can’t really replace ChenBaekXi. Xiumin’s absence in harmonies and bridge is felt so much while Chen’s high notes and perfect vocals and Baekhyun’s chameleon-esque commanding presence is being missed.

It is evident in the songs due to how much negative space there is. There are sections of songs where instrumental takes forefront, while it is new and good for EXO but there’s only one reason for it. So many of chorus need a stronger backing vocals and cascading harmonies. Songs like Crown, Touch & Go are ones where ChenBaekXi would’ve take it into next level. Suffocate and Crazy’s hooks are built around instrumentals rather than melodies sung by members…

so all in whole, this is an excellent album, especially since OT6 and we have Obsession as an album to compare… but my god, we could’ve had EVERYTHING, if only things worked out better.

But in the end, EXO HAS SURVIVED AND WILL SURVIVE. I’ll be waiting for the repackage (if there is one) and hoping for all the disputes to end in the favour of wellbeing of the members and group itself.

  • I love your review daniel-cruz. I agree with most of it except crown. I think it is fitting for a title track. The lyrics and the MV accurately protrays the crown Exo is protecting for Exol.

Now to address the elephant in the room. My honest and truthful feeling is I only missed ChenBaekXi for only 1 minute. I love this new distribution. It was refreshing to hear Lay and especially Suho take the main vocals. I loved Suho’s high note. He will get better if given more opportunity. I love Chanyeol, Kai and of course DO take more lines. I especially love Sehun take on vocals. He has such a nice vocal tone. I love how tight their choreo is.

I don’t know if it’s because of the absence of ChenBeakXi or it’s because they are a senior group now beyond the pressure of awards or numbers, but I feel in every promotion and interview they have done, they are more united than ever and more bold to be themselves, more funny and unserious. Especially DO. I love he is speaking more and not holding back that sarcastic dark humor.

I am enjoying this comeback. I think the boys did an amazing job and worked double hard. I won’t be sad if this is the permanent lineup from now on. I will still support CBX and their solo but I feel Exo and the remaining members has already moved on.

  • beautiful album overall <3

Rather than moving on, I think they've learned to manage promotions while missing some members. It started in 2014 where they lost the most popular members at the time and it went on through military enlistments until the ChenBaekXi drama. Moving on is not that easy but they can manage because they always do.

I bet those 3 will be back after 10 years or so. Huge corporations have a way of prolonging law suits or disputes for years before they lose or settle and in this case it looks like ChenBaekXi have a strong case.

I wish they were 9 again. I always knew Lay never left and when they made it official that he was back, other 3 couldn't join. This is so depressing.

  • I love the review of the album. I agree Touch&Go is the weakest, the rest are pretty solid for me.

I disagree with Crown not being fit for title track. It is the perfect title track. Back it up is good too but it lacks the title track quality for me.

I do believe CBX would have taken this album to a different place but for me it is perfect as it is.

  • To me this is a top 3 album from them. Touch & Go and Moonlight Shadows are the weakest for me too, but I would give T&G a 6 and maybe MS a 7.5. I also would give Back Pocket and I'm Home higher scores than you. Back It Up is the best song on the album for me too. And Crown is like a 9.5 for me, the more I listen to it the more it grows on me, it has basically all I want out of an EXO title track (musically speaking).

Obviously I'd rather have CBX in the group but I disagree about the negative space. If anything Exist has almost no negative space, it is relentless in how often there are adlibs and belts all over the place all the time. There is never a chance for the listener to just take a breath and relax until Let Me In, and even for that one my one criticism is that the ending of the song is just smothered in high note adlibs that it doesn't need at all. I feel like all of those adlibs were the product of separate studio sessions with no oversight at all where they let ChenBaekSoo adlib as they please and then just kept all of them, because even in EX'ACT and The War it was not to that extent at all.

Now REVERXE is definitely the most idk vibey, or open of any EXO album yet, but I prefer understated to overstated so it really doesn't bother me that much. I think a lot of care went into this album and the instrumentals are all really good and the production/mixing in general is wayy better than on Exist and DFTF. So I don't mind if they get time to shine. Listening to this album with good headphones is such an experience. Of course, I wish CBX didn't have to be excluded for this to happen, but just musically I had been hoping they'd scale things back going into this album as far as back 2024.

Now regarding CBX, Idk I've basically lost all hope they'll be back at this point. I do think at least some of ot6 are through with them (maybe I'm just sensitive but I feel like there have been some very unsubtle shading towards them in recent weeks) and more than anything the fans have cratered any chance of a reconciliation (from both sides). Like if CBX were to come back to the group it would absolutely kill the kfandom, they hate CBX now. And maybe financially sacrificing the kfandom for the rest of the world would actually be the wiser decision but we all know SM does not operate rationally and have always catered to kfans.

I don't know why but I feel like SM would take CBX back with open arms if they chose to go back. This is partly why they were forced to renew or negotiate new contracts a year before the old contracts expired.

SM knows that those boys are bankable. 2 main vocalists and 1 arguably visual of the group and an all-rounder.

I believe they'll be Exo again like Lay is.

You described exactly how I feel about Exist. It's like I couldn't breath from all the adlibs and belt. I also hated the overused of falsetto. I hardly listen to that album.

Reverex is in my top 2 album. Only second to xoxo which is still my top album from them.

I don't think you are sensitive if I feel it too from the boys. The way they thank the members who stayed and described they have manage to weather and push through the difficult time. Haha. Maybe we are both reading too much.

DO is not usually so talkative. It's like now he and Chanyeol is picking up the reins from the missing members and leading each promotion and interview. It's like he knows he has to do it for the group.

Not everything in business is about making more money. Sometimes trust is more important for a long term relationship. With the results and support from kfans, SM would be more confident to continue as they are now.

Xiumin was at a ball game recently? And he thanked Exol? Baekhyun's concert in Seoul was full of Eribongs.

I like Baekhyun and still do. But I seriously think he has gotten too big for Exo.

    It's really a 50:50 sum game now.

Oh ya, the ifans are still fighting. Each is throwing grenades at each other. I don't see a peaceful reconciliation. At this point I think it will be awkward if CBX comes back.

  • Lay looks like he really wants and is ready to be apart of Exo again but somehow, he can't promote with them? He even attended the SM anniversary concert yet he wasn't allowed to perform with Exo on stage.

It all doesn't make sense. What kind of contract is that?

Was Lay in Fukouka? I didn't see any news about this. It might be he didn't put in practise time and was unprepared to join in.

No, I think he was not in Fukuoka but I saw him in a behind the scenes clip at the SM Town show last year where even Yeri attended but didn't get to perform Run Devil Run with RV and Taeyeon and Wendy too didn't perform. He was there full time but never got to perform with Exo.

It feels like he wants to but isn't allowed to do so.

  • I think it'd be awkward for CBX to return if the Exo members are fighting, other than that, why would it be awkward?

I think CBX leaving is more than about just making more money but more about getting rightfully paid for all the work they did and weren't paid for. They made it clear that SM didn't pay them for their last promotions as CBX under SM. So why work and not get paid.

I believe CBX love being Exo more than we want them to but they are grown men some with families to take care of, so why should they accept all the bad treatment just to stay as Exo?

I don't think it's about making more money but SM doing the right thing by them.

I believe SM knew they were breaking away so they refused to pay them so as to block their smooth transition and independence.

I really feel bad for people who believe all the SM crap. They'll do anything to destroy idols who choose to leave at their own individual terms.

  • I think we should agree to disagree. If SM is such a bad company, then please don't go back. Why torture yourself? Give up on Exo and go your own way. Don't divide the Fandom anymore as it is.

I don't think it's as easy as, " give up on Exo..." they invested so much time, energy, skills etc to build the Exo brand. If it was that easy, SM would give up as well.

I still don't understand why people think it should be ok for idols to accept less or no payment at all for stability and longevity of groups. If they are paid as agreed, I'm sure many will stay and won't fight regardless of how good or bad the working conditions are.

Exo was caught in the middle of a bad power grab, a hostile takeover from LSM which led to issues in their contracts and other stuff. I wish everyone could understand that.

This has been one of issue that ifans have fought about and taken sides.

At this point, I'm just tired. At this point, SM owns Exo. If Cbx insist they were not paid properly which their appeal was rejected by the courts, then I don't see any other avenue for them to ask SM to pay them. Instead it's the other way round, SM is suing them for not paying royalties.

How is a person suppose to work together if they don't see eye to eye. The atmosphere would just be unpleasant.

    It's tiring as hell!

When elephants fight, the grass suffers most.

I hate that Exo and Exol have to suffer because of the bad management practices by SM.

I'd never blame an Exo member for what is going on. They are are like chess pieces in a game of masters. Lol!
