The custom of Dowager Queens in Korea which required Filial Duty and led to the decline of KPop

  • There is now a new korean historical movie called the King's Warden, starring ex Wanna One member Park Jihoon as the King (the ex-King, to be more accurate).

and killed at the age of 17. Park Jihoon is quite older than 17 so I do not know why he was cast at that role but I did not do the casting.

What happened is both Danjong's grandmother and mother had died before, and his grandfather's concubine had ruled as the regent along with a couple important officials.

However that meant the voice of the younger brother of the last king, Prince Sooyang (later King Sejo), who is played by Lee Jungjae in the second clip above, was much stronger since a king's concubine was nothing, and also the officials had to defer to the royals.

So Sooyang rebelled, killed the concubine and the officials, and became the King.

To prevent such incidents again, old Kings whose queens had died remarried, often to much younger women. No matter what, the younger Queen was now technically the legal Mother of the princes, so rebelling against the next king meant rebelling against their 'mother', and that violated the principle of, yes, Filial Duty.

However, since the younger Queen, who becomes the Dowager Queen, is the most senior person of the Palace, often she was able to veto any decisions the King, who is technically her son/grandson/great-grandson(which did happen once), made, and because countermanding her decision meant the King did not follow Filial Duty, a big no-no for the Confucian ideals and was reason for the King's removal (King Kwanghae did that and was deposed in 1623), a stalemate of the court was almost certain, which made Korea stagnate for so long.

Few people remember that the beatles were once the second act for a singer named Helen Shapiro, the most prominent singer in UK in 1962.

At the age of 16 she topped the British chart two times, and had a show with 11 acts, among these the Beatles was the 4th.

John Lennon wrote a song called "Misery" for Shapiro, but she rejected it (and regretted it many years later - Beatles sang it themselves) .

In 1963, with Beatles' stature bigger than before, Helen Shaprio had a program called Helen Shapiro and the Beatles show, which Paul McCartney chose to stay out.

And after the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 the Beatles conquered the world while Helen Shapiro disappeared along with other singers in the pre-Beatles era.

If Helen Shapiro remained somewhat prominent she would have been exert negative influences over Beatles, but since she was a nobody (she is still around, still performing, albeit before a way, way smaller audience) she could not do anything to the Beatles. Apparently she never met the Beatles again after they became prominent.

The Beatles also performed with Roy Orbison, who was touring UK back then and wanted to travel with a somewhat known act there. Because Orbison remained somewhat important, the Beatles did not cut ties with Orbison altogether, and Orbison performed in the memorial concert after John Lennon died.

However Orbison was based in USA and could not abuse the Senior status too often.

Of course, all of you know what I am going to say next.

KPop since 2010 has been a never ending struggle between the Domestic faction and the International faction, called KPop faction.

In 2010 the Domestic faction was on the brink of extinction, down to the last one singer, whose name i do not have to mention.

In 2014 the Domestic faction struck back with a surprisingly fierce force, and put Kpop into a grave jeopardy. MNet (CJ) and SM defeated her by giving her the Most Popular Vocalist Award, a.k.a. The Lifetime Achievement Award, at the age of 21.

However , since she was the first who debuted after 2000 to receive that award, that made her Senior to every single act, including BoA and BTS, who received the Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Ever since she has undermined KPop whenever she could, and even the dominance of Roseanne Park, MBE (and Bruno Mars)'s APT. and the Huntr/x' Golden, could not extinquish her Seniorhood.

Unlike Helen Shapiro, who fell into obscurity after the Beatles hit big , the Senior Singer/Dowager Queen of KPop , whose position was born in the 15th century because of an accident of history , is still going strong, and ready to strike in the second half of 2026.

And the tragedy is that because of the Korean custom described above, younger singers have to pay Filial Duty to the Singer who has no intention to retire to the sunset and still bothers Kpop whenever she can.

With BTS' strangely named concert to make about half of what Taylor Swift made, it won't impress the world, and in Korea the Senior Singer is plotting to turn any success of BTS outside of Korea to naught.

I wish that this mockery against Kpop should at least be removed to recognize the sacrifices BTS made for Korea , whose ungratefulness is demonstrated at this culmination of the lack of respect it has over foreigners.
