Which industry do you think is more toxic/shallow?

  • Models that actually come up through the ranks have a ton of skill, but modeling has many nepo babies. Maybe I have too shallow knoeledge of modeling, but K-pop feels more shallow to the point where you rrally can get by with looks because there are other tools to supplement thr lack of skill (e.g. autotune). It could be that I don't know what tools models have to cover things up though.

  • Had to ask for help from AI

    • If you consider an industry that seeks to control the mind, spirit, and entire existence of a person as more toxic, then K-pop might be the answer. Its toxicity is all-encompassing and invasive.
    • If you consider an industry that openly reduces a person to their physical attributes and discards them as more toxic, then modeling might be the answer. Its toxicity is blunt, cruel, and physically destructive.

Personally, existential threats are more scary to me, so k-pop.

Interesting answer by the AI when you consider they described the basic qualifications on how to become a Kpop Idol and the massive majority are training at 11 - 15 years of age that suffer from that.

And that was it's description for Models

  • I was entering this thread to say the modelling industry. Then I remember all of the stuff idols have to do to have the perfect idol image. I think there's also more pressure on idols because of fans and societal expectations.

It's a topic that many doesn't want to talk about, but I can't think of anything more toxic than getting plastic surgery because fans make fun of a person's look. Not naming any idols, but kpop industry is also shallow where they won't pay an idol mind until they fit the korean beauty standards. An idol can have an amazing voice, but if they don't fit the ideal shape of what kpop fans want in an idol, then they don't care much about the idol until they meet that standards. It's a shallow thing that is quite common.

  • I'm going to say modelling, by far.

Kpop definitely has toxic issues (bad management, body image issues, abusive behavior, impossible to maintain beauty standards etc), but modelling has those similar issues plus a LOT more.

One major one is a simple one... drugs and substance abuse. It's rare enough to hear about kpop idols have major issues with alcohol, let alone drugs. Drug use stories for idols is big news. Monster huge news.

Meanwhile, the modelling issue is rife with booze and much, much harder drugs. Theres lots of stories about models being pumped with drugs or intentionally hooked on harder drugs, either to keep them thin or keep them compliant.

Theres issues with trafficking in the modelling industry, which are probably also much worse than would ever exist in Kpop. Young people (usually girls) from poorer countries being tricked into travelling with the lure of modelling work then finding themselves trapped, either in "legit" companies under very, very awful terms that make kpop contracts seem tame, or trapped in much, much darker things.

Related to trafficking in a way that is also rife in modelling worlds is the whole "yachting" thing, where young people (again mainly women) spend lots of "time" with very wealthy older men as a means of getting ahead.

Things that are just rumours (or accusations) in Kpop that are heavily documented in the modelling world. Things that would be MAJOR scandals in kpop that barely raise eyeborws in modelling.

Kpop does both of those things, people just don't like to admit it. Not only will it reduce you to your physical attributes, it will replace your mental attributes with a set of new ones that are deemed more marketable. At least models are usually allowed to be themselves while working.

Not going to make any accusations, but there's probably more substance abuse in Kpop than we realize. The industry is likely just better at keeping those things on the down low, especially since drug charges can lead to harsher punishments in Korea.

Oh look, I think for sure Kpop idols do drugs. More than few of the bigger names have referenced drug use in some way, either in songs or elsewhere.

But I would still quite safely say that the level of drug use and drug abuse issues in the modelling world would far outweigh any drug usage in the Kpop world and would also quite possibly include far more minors in its web. Granted the modelling industry isn't AS focused on youth these days to the point where many famous models are minors, but it's still very much a thing. The modelling industry has also had "fads" like Heroin Chic and Cocaine Couture, which went a long way to glorifying and even normalising drug use, within the industry and in society as a whole.

  • I meant all things negative so toxic, shallow, superficial, unhealthy, stressful etc related emotions and it just seemed easier to umbrella them under toxic and shallow  They seem the most common within both industries

See I would (and did in my post, I overlooked shallow) differntiate the two.

Shallow is... shallow. It's superficial and crappy but not necessarily outright harmful. A guy can be shallow for instance and only go for blonde bombshells of a certain body type, but otherwise be an ok partner. Still not a great thing by any stretch of the imagination. I think many kpop fans are probably quite shallow. But even as an "art form" kpop, like most manufactured pop, is shallow. It's the fast food of musical arts.

Toxic to me implies something more harmful. Something that can, and likely will, cause actual harm to those that interact with it. Being with a toxic partner will probably have poor outcomes for someone, either mentally, physically or both. That shallow guy could ALSO be toxic and abusive. But so could someone who isn't shallow at all. A very toxic workplace doesn't need to be shallow or vice versa.

So yeah, I wrote my post from the idea of which industry is more toxic. More harmful and dangerous to those caught up in it.

Yes, I get what you mean! How I saw it was all were under Toxic :/

Being shallow in day to day life doesnโ€™t always include being harmful but in front of millions/ billions and online being shallow practically does include harmful stuff. Idols and models are body shamed, visually shamed and more etc

I thought toxic and shallow represented negative emotions in both industries  hope it makes sense!
