Honestly, the copycat allegation was mostly because kpop fans are too lazy to critical think. Magnetic sounded nothing like a NewJeans song. I strongly believe what hurt Illit was the aesthetics for their debut and how Hybe presented them. Hybe needed to do something to differentiate themselves in aesthetics from NewJeans, but failed to do so. I think they should've realized they had to present them differently when people confused Illit for NewJeans at a fashion show. I think that moment, people had the narrative that Illit was a copycat group.
Hybe/Belift set those girls up because if they presented them differently for their debut. Then, I think Illit would be the clear top 5th gen group, but failing to do so put the group in their current situation. It's sad because I think they make some of the best music for a 5th gen group but right now they're in recovery mode and most likely won't reach their full potential.

I voted yes! I think illit are developing into their own concept/ path which is now very different to NJz!
You would be lying if you said the copying/influencing wasn’t there originally. I’m sure part of it was media play from hybe to hype up the new rookies but yes it was obvious
I think now though illit do have their own identity.I’m easily able to differentiate between Illit and Njz music and branding
Whether that’s because NJz trajectory has been cut short so there’s little influence left for them to take I guess is another question

They were never copycats imo. Looking back, I could never see Newjeans putting out Magnetic or any of the songs on their debut ep.
That said, I feel like the only thing people were poking similarities at were that they were a 5 member gg. Had illit remained 6 or even extended their lineup, I don’t think the accusations would’ve existed in the first place.

- But Be:Lift did use NJZ concepting and planning documents shared to them internally through HYBE without MHJ’s consent as a base for Illit’s own, which is a real problem of plagiarism within HYBE’s subsidiaries and I understand why MHJ was upset about it.
- Of course that’s no reason to attack the girls.
- Illit release great music. Bomb EP is immaculate, a perfect run from start to finish. Something very few kpop EPs pull off (NewJeans Get Up being another).

This part is key because their sound is not close to NewJeans imo.
I think Hybe/Belift had the opportunity to walk back on it when NewJeans comparisons were happening pre-debut. However, they decided not to and made the group endure an unfair hate train. It's a shame because they really didn't have to follow through with it. The concept they had for Bomb EP would've set themselves apart from other groups.
Imo they wouldn't be taking away from NewJeans if they didn't go through with plan. There was room for both NewJeans and Illit to coexist in the market. It's just that Hybe/Belift didn't plan it properly and in the end did a lot of damage to their company.
