Kpop Huntrix songs doesn't sound like typical Kpop?

  • Only Soda Pop do have that 'Kpop' vibe if you know what I mean. The way the songs are structured if that makes sense. While How It Sounds Like and Golden are typical western radio pop songs you hear in the background in shopping malls or fitness center.

I'm happy for the success of Kpop Demon Hunters, but I notice a segment of koreans in Korea doesn't care that much except for Twice? As for Huntrix, they are korean-americans and maybe the koreans doesn't feel so related to them.

  • well generally most people consider it kpop so kpop it is...

I mean it begs the question of what is really kpop?

Many people have different opinion what Kpop really is. But just to say that I have nothing against Demon Hunters. Happy for the success and the awareness it brings to korean culture. It's just me nitpicking on the songs but that is subjective taste.

that's understandable I mean take twice for example I'm generally not much of a fan of their more "westernised music" (ie. the recent songs they've sung primarily or a majority of in English) but I still enjoy the group's content and there's nothing stopping me from enjoying their older "more korean discography"

  • You also got to remember that the movie is a musical. The songs in it need to not just be "kpop songs" but also songs that fit in the genre of a musical as well. Now I'm not great myself at explaining what that distinction is, but they generally need to fit a storyline, expand the narrative and create the emotional resonance needed for that part of the movie/story. There's usually a degree of "epicness" as well yo musical songs. You can't just plonk a "kpop song" somewhere in a musical and expect it to work. It's the same as other musicals, especially animated ones. As a different example, Let It Go wouldn't have been as big as it was if it was just a pop song. It was crafted especially for that part of the movie, and it was the emotional connection viewers formed when watching the movie that made the song really land with the audience.

The reason Soda Pop DOES in the context is in the movie it is very much presented as literally just a Kpop song. It doesn't need to drive the narrative, tell a story or hit the emotional beats as much as Golden, What it Feels Like, Your Idol, the movie version of Takedown or Free does.

  • Yea I'd agree with this. Personally I am fine calling it k-pop since that's clearly what it is intended to be, but it does feel like they just took a more western pop song and threw 10 Korean words in it. Though you could say the same of plenty of other k-pop songs, but like the lyrics are 95% English and it sounds more like western pop than k-pop to me.

  • If I AM sounds like kpop then G‍olden does too.

Indeed. The first time I listened to "G‍olden", my first thought, about 15 seconds in, was "this sounds like it should be an I‍VE song".

  • it's the vocals. That's why IVE's I Am sounds more kpop than Golden. Huntrix have very "Western"-coded voices, deep, full, singing with soul.

The majority of kpop vocals are either very high-pitched or throaty/nasal. Even the stronger singers tend to favour a more headvoice-based mix than the full chesty belts you get from someone like Ejae.

  • If BlackPink had released how it's done, would you consider it kpop or not?

Too be honest I have barely listen to How it's Done, mostly only Golden, so I can't really say much about it. But yes, it more likely because it done a by a group that is a kpop group and that it's the most important factor to decide if it's kpop or not. Are the group a kpop group and/or music from a korean kpop company. Singing in english make it less kpop. Thats why it's easy to say Golden is not kpop. It's in english, it's not performed by any kpop artists and it does not really sound like kpop, it's basically a pop song for a solo artist.
