What does stage presence mean to you? And what are your favorite stages?

  • It’s an interesting question. In terms of pure, unadulterated stage presence, I have to post this Ano live (sorry to post jpop to a kpop question). She has weak (some might say annoying) vocals in the studio, but when she steps onto the stage she becomes Ozzy Osborne. The metal screams legit send shivers down my spine lol:

CaraFIMIE already posted my fav NewJeans live, especially Danielle’s Super Shy. Wow she’s so good here.

NewJeans have loads of great performances and really know when to break from the choreo at the right moments and get the crowd fired up. I love this OT5 How Sweet performance, especially the middle when they do the dance break and start chanting “Go Haerin, go Haerin!’

In terms of more intimate stage presence, what can be more captivating than Rosé’s Sea of Hope performances. I just want to drink in every second of this:

Lastly I need to post this live from Lee Chan-Hyuk (AKMU) froma few weeks ago. This stage is CRAZY, the dude channels all of Earth, Wind and Fire here. It’s not usually my sort of music, but this performance is just so captivating to watch:

  • For some people it's confidence and command of stage, like Seulgi, Jennie, Lisa, Taeyeon and for others it's just how much fun they're having to the point where you can see just how much they love what they do. Jihyo is probably the best example but if I could be biased: Baek Yerin.

Sheisn't an idol anymore, doesn't really dance or put on huge performances and she used soooooo introvert and awkward. And there's just something so magical about seeing someone so clearly awkward get to doing what she really loves, get lost in it and completely come out of her shell mid performance and than immediately go back in it when the music stop. It almost feels intruding on an affair at times.

She's probably the only artist where I'll never get tired of her lives and it's obvious why her performances end up being as famous as her music.

There should be a balance of great vocals and dancers fin a group for me to enjoy it all holistically instead of just one or the other.

  • A good mix between improvised perfomance and "scripted" routines, and it should be relaxed but still well perfomed. A good balance between interaction with the audience and the performing. If I compare my two favorites 2NE1 and T-ARA, 2NE1 could be great on stage, T-ARA could be a bit stiff on stage in my opinion even if their songs was the best.

But it's a hard balance, some groups overdo the "improvising" and interacting with the audience a bit.

  • Stage presence simply means to become one with the music and the audience. If an artist can do that, they have great stage presence.

That's all there is to it.

They don't have to be perfect vocalists or dancers. They just have to show that they're passionate about what they're doing and that they genuinely want to make that connection with the music and the crowd.

  • It's a very subjective topic which is why you'll get different answers.

To me it's about commanding the stage where it's hard to keep your eyes off of the person. It's also how a performance can make you connect with the artist because you can be a good singer or dancer, but if you can't connect with the audience, then the artist might lack stage presence.

I think it has a lot to do with body language, energy, effort, and confidence. I think a person can sense when a person isn't confident on stage and it can show through body language, energy, and effort when singing or dancing. I think with kpop it's interesting because a lot of stage presence could be about confidence when dancing on stage because there's a lot of tricks with camera work, mics not being fully on, AR, and other smoke and mirrors being used.

I find this topic very interesting because I got fully into kpop because the stage presence of Lisa and Jihyo. It felt like magic watching them perform and how they commanded the stage with their energy and effort.

I think what's getting a bit lost with current kpop is groups not having the mics on which is hurting the stage presence. I think seeing idols having the mic on and dancing with a lot of energy is a great way to show stage presence. Like somebody mentioned in this thread, Dayoung is currently going viral because her mic is on and is showing a lot of energy when dancing on the stage and singing well while dancing.

Stage presence is becoming a lost art which is why many will have comments about 4th and 5th gen idols lacking it. I think we need to put mics back on and allow idols win audiences over. It's hard to showcase stage presence if we can't hear a person's voice. I think hearing a person sing while their dancing is an easy way to capture the audience. People don't care if a person isn't the most skilled, but many like to hear artist sing and dance.

As for soloist, it's usually about the vocals because hearing a person sing well will usually capture my attention. for Korean music hearing Heize, Sejeong, Yerin Baek, Bibi, Taeyeon and a few others have great vocals and commanded attention with their voices is what I will call stage presence. You hear the confidence in their voices when they sing and the energy they put onstage while singing will always capture me. I think when an artist is mainly known for singing you will feel stage presence with their voice, body language, and confidence on stage. Also, think soloist like Chungha and Sunmi deserve a shout because seeing them dance and sing well on stage with great energy is why many usually mention them when talking about stage presence.

Sorry about long post didn't expect to ramble this much

  • It's simple: when someone is so captivating, you can't take eyes off of them. The unbiased stage presences can be seen if you don't follow the group and aren't blinded by their personalities.

For example, i know nothing about stray kids personality wise but 5 of their members have amazing stage presence which is the reason i know their names and don't know the names of the rest 3. Same goes for yujin, xiaoting...

They don't have to be amazing singers or dancers, hell, dancing isn't requirement at all, Adele, anyone? it's the aura, contact with the audience and feeling that they enjoy being on the stage.

  • The Rampage’s stage presence is unmatched. With 13 performers and 3 vocalists, they hit with the force of a tidal wave, every move is sharp, every vocal lands, and the energy never dips. I’ve watched nearly every group in the Exile Tribe, but none come close to them. They’re so entertaining and powerful that I gradually stopped following K-pop because nothing else gives me the same rush.

There are so many of their stages i just love:

  • Who are the 5 members you know, mrs Doesit? :pepe-shoooketh:

    Rapline, felix and hyunjin :D

I actually wanted to make this thread when we were in stray kids era on this forum :D wanted to know how many members non fans know. but forgot. I think most people know them 5.

I know there's someone called lee know and he's a visual. My issue is that i never agree with korean visuals, i always find someone else prettier lol. I could try with elimination process but the point is i'd never recognize him on my own

  • Rapline, felix and hyunjin :D

    Oh, I see! I imagined you'd say 3RACHA and/or Felix and Hyunjin.

And I think Hyunjin, Felix and Bang Chan would probably be Top 3 in your poll.

About Lee Know, he definitely has a conventional beauty,

but I wouldn't say he's promoted or pushed as a visual. I believe that role is more often filled by Hyunjin and Felix.

And honestly, my bet is that they prefer it this way. Lee Know doesn't seem to care much about individual prominence or getting opportunities for such, while I see Hyunjin and Felix do, because they love fashion and modeling.

To give you an idea, It took Lee Know months to create an instagram after the members already did it, and most of his Instagram posts have a black background. He's very... singular in terms of personality :meme-negative-man: you have to see it to understand.

  • Lemme show you

  • Ahahaha bless him. I can relate to him, social media is too much work ^^

As for Hyunjin and Felix; i don't think it's only face/beauty, it's their charisma that can be seen on photos as well. It's obvious they love fashion. You have a lot of pretty people but they don't have that something to appeal the masses (i love my faves a lot, but for whatever reason tae appeals to more people than jin even tho he is official visual).

The very first time i watched stray kids live performance the first guy i noticed was han. He reminded me on both suga and jhope so that was interesting. I like his vocal color and rap style a lot. Then i noticed the 4 i mentioned. I'm talking about first live performance , not MV, they can be visually way too stimulating. And the performance in question was god's menu, there's way too much going on in MV lol.

Them enjoying this much success shouldn't be surprising to anyone. God know how many people who never listen to them but went to their concert with their friends came back as fans. That's also what stage presence is, when you know how to animate people who never heard of you and know your songs.

Anyways, this somehow ended up about me praising stray kids lol

  • Han jisung mention 🥰

He's my bias in stray kids because of his stage presence. Like he's excellent vocally but his stage presence elevates all his performances.
