Or has extra versions been around since the beginning making it impossible?

Name a group that sold an album over 1 million with no extra versions

Seems H.O.T, Seo Taiji and the Boys and g.o.d managed it in the 90s but by the time kpop group albums started selling in the millions again, versions had arrived.

This is faux-naïf or just a false equivalence.
The market is completely different, and people buy these things for different reasons. All the multiple versions make sense if you realize the physical album is no longer a functional way to listen to music but an item for fans to collect etc.

1st gen will always compete with 1st gen. After Seo Taiji & Boys disbanded, a korean guy told me the top 3 artists were H.O.T, Jo Sungmo, and g.o.d in the late 90's/early 00's.
Groups today can fight for #1 and who's selling millions with the addition of versions or not.

I was so close to name someone outside of KPop cause most artists outside Korea (and a few Asian countries) barly ever make multiple versions
