Outside of NJZ, is there an active girl group today you think can become a top 5 girl group of all time?

  • For context, Korea was already surveyed on this and NJZ is already top 3 according to Gallup Survey data, trailing behind only SNSD (the most iconic and impactful girl group ever) and BP (the most successful girl group ever):

What 4th/5th Gen girl groups do you think have a shot at top 5? If any at all?

  • 2023 IVE >>>>>> 2024 aespa statistically and it's not close

2023 IVE was just overshadowed by the greatest peak year in girl group history (NJZ); it's not their fault

It's like faulting athletes during Michael Jordan's prime for not winning rings during his reign. They were great; they just happened to play at the same time as GOAT.

I know you love my sports analogies, so I wrote that one just for you :meme-wink:

Aespa because genuinely who else lmao

    The IVE disrespect is wild

Where is catzi at these days to stand on IVE business

Waiiittttt forgive me I forgot about them!!! I don't see too much about them on my social media!!!

    :meme-ahhh:

Twice is definitely already there, yeah. But I guess my answer is no girl group because IVE had a smashing debut but I think they need another big viral moment for me personally to consider them. Or maybe my social media algorithms are somehow anti-IVE....

  • Aespa. Whiplash already started out charting Rebel Heart.

IVE really just suffered from the optics of being second place to NJZ in their biggest years so far, when in any other timeline without NJZ, they would be lapping the competition.

All those records and daesangs would've gone to IVE if they hadn't gone to NJZ, and they would have so many records, but NJZ had video game numbers from 2022-2023. Their biggest hits from 2022 are STILL in the top 100 and it's 2025.

But now the question becomes can any current girl group supplant a

    2NE1

    Wonder Girls

    Kara

    Sistar

    S.E.S.

    FinKl

Or whomever you want to put in that fifth and final spot.

    I say no.

  • BP Twice SNSD are top 3 easily, I don't think any new gen group is already on pair with these legends who proved their status with YEARS of domination, not just rookies years.

Korea disagrees with you. NJZ could retire today and already would be one of the most accomplished groups in history :pepe-smug:

At this point unless NJZ make a comeback I don’t think they’ll be making this list at all. Recency bias may have them be here right now but if you don’t last more than two years you don’t deserve to be on any top of all times list.

I would remove NJZ and add Aespa I think they’re the ones who will last. Well them or IVE. Or both.

Their seismic impact, record smashing discography, cultural reset, and even their historic legal dispute, put them firmly light years ahead of their peers. That's why Korea picked them as the third greatest girl group of the 21st century.

    So you're WRONG as usual.

  • also NJZ cannot be a top 5 group until they prove they actually are a Michael Jordan, and not just another Derrick Rose.

Oh hell no. Rose lost his peak to numerous injuries before he could compete for a title as his team's best player.

If this was sports, NJZ has already won Rookie of the Year, League MVP, Championships, Finals MVPs and every record in the book has their name next to it. They're like the Golden State Warriors of K-Pop; they came out, dominated and now everyone emulates them in the hopes of yielding similar results

Do NOT play the sports analogy game with ME :meme-point:

Idk Rose is a solid analogy. Injuries == Hybe/ador sabotage, but let's see what happens when they have a comeback.

GSW does fit them well, but Magic Johnson could also be a good analogy for them. Didn't win ROTY but got a finals MVP and all-star starter in his rookie year.

  • I asked Chatgpt

The "greatest" girl groups in K-Pop history can be subjective, depending on factors like influence, success, impact, and longevity. However, here are five of the most iconic and influential K-Pop girl groups:

    1. Girls' Generation (SNSD)

Often referred to as "The Nation's Girl Group," Girls' Generation is one of the most iconic and successful K-pop groups of all time. They played a major role in bringing K-pop to a global audience, with massive hits like Gee, Genie, and I Got a Boy. They are known for their incredible vocal abilities, stunning visuals, and pioneering efforts in the K-pop industry.

    2. BLACKPINK

BLACKPINK has become a global phenomenon, known for their fierce performances and powerful sound. With chart-topping hits like DDU-DU DDU-DU, Kill This Love, and How You Like That, BLACKPINK has achieved record-breaking success on both Korean and international charts, securing a massive fanbase worldwide.

    3. Wonder Girls

One of the first K-pop groups to make a serious impact internationally, the Wonder Girls are best known for their hit song Nobody, which became the first K-pop song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Their influence in shaping the early wave of K-pop's global rise is immense.

    4.2NE1

Known for their edgy, rebellious style and empowering messages, 2NE1 was one of the most groundbreaking K-pop groups. With hits like Fire, I Am the Best, and Come Back Home, they pushed the boundaries of K-pop, blending various genres and leaving a lasting mark on the industry.

    5. TWICE

TWICE is known for their catchy songs, vibrant concepts, and strong connection with fans. With songs like Cheer Up, TT, and Fancy, they have consistently dominated charts in South Korea and internationally, becoming one of the top girl groups of the 2010s and beyond.

These groups have had a lasting impact on the K-pop industry, each shaping it in their unique way and inspiring countless fans around the world.

However, NewJeans (NJZ) have already reshaped the industry with the immense success and impact of their sudden debut and wildly popular songs that popularized easy listening and fresh concepts, becoming the new standard in K-Pop today. Though currently mired in legal disputes with their parent company, they can already be considered one of the five greatest girl groups in K-Pop history.

  • Lmaooo NJ isn't even in the top 5 when he rank, snsd, wonder girls, 2NE1, S.E.S, blackpink, twice, red velvet, itzy, aespa, new jeans, lesserafim, izone, nmixx and IVE

    Rookie numbers

We've seen MUCH better from peak IVE, let alone NJZ.

If Hybe wins the case and puts them in a dungeon, they may be knows as the Jeremy Linn (or Stephon Marbury) of kpop. :whistling:

    It's not even close.

aespa have to prove they can match peak IVE before we talk about anything else

  • like you said "peak"

what make a group a top group and be recognize as one fo the all time best is longevity to sustain their peak and for the moment Aespa have been the only GG from 4th gen to have enough longevity in their career to have 2 peaks

    :meme-life-support:

They've had one good year fam, and they were behind NJZ in every single metric even in their peak year

    They aren't them.

  • Korea disagrees with you. NJZ could retire today and already would be one of the most accomplished groups in history :pepe-smug:

Their seismic impact, record smashing discography, cultural reset, and even their historic legal dispute, put them firmly light years ahead of their peers. That's why Korea picked them as the third greatest girl group of the 21st century.

    So you're WRONG as usual.

    Nope.

  • I hate to say it and I know Yama hates to hear it, but it's very hard to compare NJZ with others when it's missing such a huge criteria- touring. Of course, do I believe NJ could've and even right now sell out a smash world tour? Of course. But unless it materializes, it'll always make comparisons difficult. It's why groups like SISTAR or Wonder Girls can never be in contention, sorry. Kara also dicey because they could only tour big in Japan. SNSD were the top touring girl group of their gen with album sales/fandom that rivaled top boy groups, Twice and BP I don't need to say more. And I don't consider SES in contention either when they lost to Finkl in certain metrics as well.

Aespa is more promising than Ive but it depends on how they continue to perform for the next 2-3 years and if they're able to eventually reach the kind of venues Twice and BP pull. SM historically has never been strong at global tour numbers, I hope Aespa will prove the exception. I think Wonyoung and Ahn Yujin will be the most famous individually of their gen in the future tho, especially if Ahn Yujin gets into acting.

The reason I'm fixating on tour numbers (which I know is just one part of the evaluation) is that this is an area that girl group historically performed weaker compared to boy groups so it's easy to stand out in comparison. All top girl groups have their runs of digital hits (ofc none with as high peak as NJ) but ultimately longevity and audience reach will remain the most impressive parts of anyone's career.

  • They have the most streamed girl group album in history, which is now on pace to be the most streamed album ever. They have the second most streamed girl group song in history, on pace to the the most streamed girl group song ever.

You sure the rest of the listening public agrees with you?

I'm not sure why I should care what the public thinks when making my own top 5 list.
