DUIs are always serious but I think he got dragged wayyyyy too hard. They are not taken as seriously in the West so it's odd to me but I understand. Like Justin Bieber got an underage DUI driving his lambo and was belligerent iirc, but I doubt many even remember that.

Absolutely agree. It was totally a stupid move. The ferocity of hate was disturbing. I believe he is a good person and hope that he finds forgiveness and the lesson in all of this. In our lives we have done something that has hurt someone probably not intentionally and have experienced the grace of forgiveness. I wish that all idols are shown some compassion. None of us are perfect.

It is and was serious and there are those whose ulterior motive in dragging him as hard as they did had nothing to do with the actual DUI - they would have dragged him for anything they could.

It's a pretty neat piece of ammo. DUI is a crime recognized both internationally and in Korea, but crucially people - intentionally or not - always leave out the fact that he was on an electric scooter.

DUI is loaded with connotation and people like to use it to slam him, even if the actual action wasn't on the same level of the connotation.
I'm going to point it out like this: What he did is wrong. His haters are never going to let his fans forget that like they're a toxic ex using "that one time" as ammo over and over again.
Idols get inexplicably high levels of adulation. Their very ordinary acts of kindness is praised to extraordinary levels.
Therefore it is only to be expected that when they fail, make a mistake, the reverse happens, they earn extraordinary amount of censure, that an ordinary person making the same mistake won't.
Besides DUI even if no one was harmed, shouldn't be treated lightly.

Definitely definitely this. I just feel very strongly in this, condemn the action, not the person, as some sort of write off.
I have no idea whether Korean GP will come back around to him, but Grace is a powerful thing, and he deserves it as much as anyone else, since he obviously regrets his actions.

I just wanted to point out that electric scooters are deadly. Literally a couple months ago in my LA neighborhood, a old man was hit by a woman not paying attention on an electric scooter going way too fast and he died. Was she drunk? No idea. It was a hit and run, and as far as I know, they never found her. Regardless, my point is that I really wish people wouldn't downplay how dangerous electric scooters are.
That being said. Nobody, let alone idols, deserve any of hate they receive. But also another reminder that Korean idols are idols. They are meant to be role models, and they are subject to much more scrutiny than popstars comparatively in the West are. Again, I don't condone it, but plenty of idols have their careers ended for less (Seunghan being a very recent example), so I don't think Suga's case is particularly uniquely harsh in its backlash.

Ohhh that's a fair point. I vaguely recall setting a speed limit for legally considering a motor vehicle in California by capping "cycling" scooters at 20 mph, where anything above that is a "motorbike" or something similar. I hadn't realized they'd be so deadly but yeah now that you point it out, it seems pretty dangerous.

I feel like this is a perspective I need to focus more on. As an american, born and raised, I often tend to think "idols are humans and humans make mistakes" and indeed I tend to argue that, but as you've pointed out, idols are also role models -- and tend to walk a much finer tightrope in the public view in korea.
I do think several people took it too far (such as trying to force him out of the group), but any form of DUI is serious no matter how people want to spin it. Yes, this time he was fine. This time he was "just" on the sidewalk and didn't hurt anybody. But it only takes one mistake, one slip up for something bad to happen - even while sober. Add alcohol or any other drug to the mix? It becomes even more dangerous.
This also happened, what, a month after an old woman had died in Korea due to a scooter accident similar to Yoongi's situation. So people were rightfully taking this seriously considering someone literally died in an accident regarding these scooters recently (at the time). It's not a joke, no matter how silly or outlandish it may seem. People have literally died due to negligence via those scooters.
No. He doesn’t need to leave BTS. I think once his military service is complete he needs to address it with his members and fans and reassure that this error in judgement won’t happen again. Does he have an issue with drinking too much? There has to be truthfulness and sincerity in words and action.
It is interesting to compare another SK high profile celebrity, Lee Jung-Jae, who has multiple DUI arrests with a CAR and assaulted a woman and having quite the high peak of his career right now with Squid Game
I can't speak for Korea, but in my country there's been a massive increase in scooter related injuries (and two deaths) relating to scooter accidents, including 25% of those being 3rd party (ie not the person on the scooter).
To be on something like that while intoxicated is just.... an exceedingly poor lapse of judgement. A lapse of judgement that prompts questions about decision making.
Bit like Irene's scandal - it's not just the act itself, but the mindset someone has to have to even do this act is rather astonishing, it brings into question the nature of the person itself.
Then, ontop of the very questionable personal decision making, there was the elements of the cageyness and the poor attempts at mediaplay about the accident in question. That also gets people offside.
I'm not saying he should necessarily lose his career over this, but it's far more serious then people who go "oh it's just a scooter blah blah" understand or realize.

Was the hate too much? Sure, but imo this blew up way more bc of armys (yes, not all). The way they reacted as if DUI is just a joke, tried to cancel a whole country over it, several hashtags when the news broke out etc kinda made people mad and as this is kpop, everything will go back to the idols, love or hate, unfortunately that it is.
But it's the same question with the same answer: if this was a BB/exo member would armys mind their own business or not?
