Article: 'Joseon Exorcist' under controversy for distorting history, Chinese reactions to current situation

    1. [+792] I hate this so much ㅠ I don't want to hear these things from the Chinese.. why are things like this lately

    2. [+477] I can't believe such a ridiculous drama passed in the initial stages in the first place

    3. [+368] A drama that is totally dumping oil on what the Chinese have already been claiming ^^

    4. [+257] First the Chinese bibimbap in 'Vincenzo'... it's so sad that we're seeing more and more Chinese products in our dramas

    5. [+181] When making a drama about real life figures, please only write about the facts. No more things from the imaginations. Let's please realize the reality that we're in.

    6. [+120] This drama is a total distortion of history. They're wrong the wrong hats, they have the wrong architecture... if they're not going to reflect actual history, why not just turn it into a fictional world? Why use the names of actual figures and cause this confusion?

    7. [+187] Fail fail fail. The drama's going to lose all its sponsors and end its run early ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    8. [+60] Everything needs to be changed from the hair to the clothes ㅡㅡ I had high expectations going in but then wondered if I was watching some Chinese drama

    1. [+100] As you deserve~

    2. [+81] It's gotta be a feat to have a drama be canceled just after the first episode

    3. [+56] Just close the whole thing, I won't be watching it

    4. [+38] *spit*

    5. [+39] A good lesson in what will happen if you distort our history

    6. [+27] Do not mess with King Sejong's name... all of this would've been fine if they had done it like 'Moon Who Embraces the Sun' by just taking the historical context and making fictional characters...

    7. [+27] Poor actors... all because of these thoughtless directors and scriptwriters

    8. [+13] I'm surprised that this was even broadcast at all, and that it was chosen by producers in the first place

  • The anti-Chinese sentiment in Korea is scary right now. They're even criticizing companies and shows who have Chinese investors. Which is practically every company.

They've criticized other shows too for Chinese product placement too.

Can't blame them. The Chinese are taking credit for everything that represents Korea and their culture.

Considering the massive human-rights violations in China, I don't blame Koreans for their criticisms. Japan is slowly gaining the anti-chinese sentiment for the same reason.

They could've used other names which are not real and claimed It's fiction.

Ofcourse, you will defend this as a yg stan lol

Well yes. They can ask for it to be corrected, although the disclaimer at the beginning of the shows say it's fictional which should be obvious and not have to be said.

At the end of the day we're talking about clothing, food and props in a fictitious drama not a history book. I can understand being preturbed about it and asking for it to be corrected. But there shouldn't be this huge backlash.

Also, there shouldn't be anger because a company has Chinese investors. I'd guess virtually every publicly-traded company in Korea has at least some Chinese investment.

I actually agree. Just use fictitious names so there won't be confusion.

Clothing, food and props in a historical drama represent cultural identity and history. They're a big deal. I'd share these same sentiments if this happened in my country and props, food or clothing that belong to a country we were at war with or that occupied my country were used instead of our own real traditional things.

  • Considering the massive human-rights violations in China, I don't blame Koreans for their criticisms. Japan is slowly gaining the anti-chinese sentiment for the same reason.

I would differentiate the people who live and work in China from their government. The people and companies there may not necessarily agree with their government just like I don't always agree with my country's. I don't blame the people who happen to live there for the violations of the government.

I agree. They have a right to be upset and ask for it to be corrected.

But there have been articles in Korea targeting companies in Korea that happen to have investors from companies in China.

  • IMDB only lists 2 dramas under the production company. I know that ain't right because Moon Lovers was made by the same production company.

    This ^

    I know. Right?

If someone claims to be against real person fan fiction, they should criticize these types of dramas as well. It's hypocritical if they are not.

btw I'm not against real person fan fiction if it is done tastefully.

Sure, many people may not necessarily agree, but that doesn't mean they still might be part of the problem if they aren't speaking out or making meaningful actions.

The anti-China sentiment isn't about the people individually, but the country and their government. The two do overlap some, but it's not based on the individuals. Supporting Chinese money, or accepting Chinese money, in any large-scale thing (tv show, business, etc) is doing nothing to make meaningful change. For those of us not in China, speaking with our wallets is almost all we can do. For those in China that have enough money to invest overseas that are negatively impacted by the anti-Chinese sentiment, they also have enough money to try and make such changes in their own country (in regards to the human-rights violations). Because after all, the people passively being against it is actually helping the violations to flourish. The violations of the government often happen (throughout history) because those in charge know that the people (overall) that are unaffected will passively accept it and it just snowballs from there (which is what we're seeing in China).

    Just my perspective.

Edit: Not sure how and why it quoted another user and idk how to fix it. Sorry

I appreciate your perspective and agree with some of it. I think it should be a case by case basis, for example, the recent H&M controversy. Also the NBA punishing one of their team owners for speaking in support of the people of Hong Kong after China threatened to not allow the NBA there, so the NBA punished the owner because of the NBA financial hit it would have taken by cutting ties with China.

I agree with H&M in this case and also think the NBA shouldn't have punished the the team owner for supporting the people of Hong Kong.

So I guess I look at each individual case.

I think there are times to make exceptions on a case by case basis, but overall it's too difficult to look at every single case without first having a blanket policy. Thank you for your perspective as well.

  • Good thing they did not cancel kingdom for the historical distortion of having zombies.
