"If you can’t sing well, no matter how good you are at dancing, you won't look talented".

  • Bold statement in this time and age, indeed.

We definitely agree with him, if you are singer you should be able to sing. When it comes to vocal performances exo definitely has high standards.

We also love man who holds himself to this standard, Xiumin is both lead vocalist and lead dancer in exo and part of CBX.

At this point I hope he will join survival show as a mentor.

  • While i disagree with his statement kind of i do see where he’s coming from because why cant all the back up dancers be idols then?

I think good dancing over good singing preference would only make sense if a person is idk... deaf? I think bad singing would ruin any live stage and any listening time.

Exactly, back up dancers are only dancers because they don't sing/rap and they only dance (obviously lol).

  • Strongly disagree if he's talking about vocal technique. Nobody cares about vocal technique in pop music, this isnt opera or Broadway. Some of the most complimented idols in terms of technique still make no waves and never appear on any top idol lists. Also, it's IMPOSSIBLE to have good vocal technique when you're dancing. All technical stuff goes out the window when you arent allowed to maintain support by constantly having to dance, all good vocalists still end up having to basically shout their notes instead of giving them proper support.

I'm 50/50 if he's talking about vocal color which is far more important in pop music. That can make a difference, you can be the best performer in the world with world class technique, but if your tone is unpleasant folks will not want to tune in.

Then if we're talking about studio recordings, with today's technology, neither vocal tone nor technique matter. Vocals are so processed today that you can be made to sound like anybody else, you can also miss a pitch by 10 notes and still sound perfectly in tune with autotune which instantly adjusts the notes. TBH artists probably dont even have to record in a studio, computers can probably at this point just take samples of your past songs and create your vocals for the next album using past samples.

OTOH live performances cant be faked by a computer. There is no substitute for dance ability, group choreo, background sets, and costumes.

  • The bare minimum for an idol is:

    • above average in looks
    • mid in singing
    • mid in dancing

If someone excel in any of those categories, while still meeting the bare minimum for the others, they'll probably attract fans. The thinking in the industry is: the more of "those types" they have, the more fans will be attracted. And if these idols are able to work as a cohesive element, they'll probably see some success.

  • i disagree

and im the biggest hater of untalented idols

i think as long as you are not singing much anyway, being good at atleast two other things like dance and rap or dance and visuals is more than enough

however if you sing, and sing badly, you are ruining the efforts of everyone working behind the scenes to feed you success

    Lies, you forgot

Ok, I was going for bare bare minimum, but yes, all of these after you pass the first entry hoop.

Cause history has shown debuting idols that do these either makes you the talk of the town or ends your career or both.

  • I agree tho should at least be able to carry somewhat of a tune if your singing it doesn’t have to be perfect but u should still have that ability. But i do like vocal tone/color more in a pop song so for me it matters

imo, sometimes in live performances singing that u don’t like can take away a little bit but that’s just me cause that’s what i prefer

  • I think your unique talent is to always miss the point but your enthusiasm always charms me that I can't even be mad at you ;(

And if you have amazing visuals you don't need the other two.

But on serious note, if group or an idol is only excellent in dancing and has terrible singing skill it won't look good. Some talent is definitely required.

  • Except he's objectively wrong. Lisa is like the only BP member who's been given constant praise throughout this tour and she can't sing but can dance.

Shes got more praise, fame or money than him or anyone who knows. Facts just objectively prove this guy wrong.

  • hmm I said this in another thread and this is just my personal opinion

So glad that Infinite has no problems with any of this.

Top tier vocalists, rappers, and known for their amazing choreography that they STILL pull off today as well as their immaculate live vocals.

    Yeah they good.

but singing is important, if the singing is bad i'm not gonna enjoy a song, however if they are performing, as long as it's not obvious they aren't even trying, I don't care if it's live or not i'd rather be entertained and enjoying it then worrying about how perfect the vocals are.

I'm confident in infinites abilities as is the op and other fans are of exo. ♡

I just think the age of the vocalist is over, much like the Third Age of Kpop. ;(

Like, i grew up at a time of Steve Perry and Whitney Houston belting out ballad after ballad, blowing us away with their talent and topping charts at the same time. ;(

I even got to live through the tail end of the age of the vocalist, with Clarkson, Ariana when she actually used to sing, Adele, and Gaga.

But now just one look at the Hot 100 or Spotify charts and you can tell that nobody cares about vocals anymore. Everything is stripped down chanting, mumble rapping, autotune. Kelly Clarkson came out with the best album since Drivers License and nobody seemed to care ;( , even i only discovered it like a couple weeks ago. Gaga had an amazing ballad for Top Gun and nobody cared. Even Adele's comeback seemed to fizzle out after initial interest, despite how amazing her song was.

Same thing is happening in Kpop, although there is more hope here. Idle is holding out with their vocal heavy songs, Ive standing strong with I AM, the hardest pop song to sing. But

New Jeans fever is sweeping the nation, and vocal prowess is pretty much last on the priority list of their concepts. ;(

  • Except he's objectively wrong. Lisa is like the only BP member who's been given constant praise throughout this tour and she can't sing but can dance.

Making money has nothing to do with the conversation.

You can have no talent and also make money.

  • It's convenient you ignore the point about her being hugely famous and having a lot of praise for her performances over the tour.

I mean this is a very debatable thing on whether that type of praise is “enough”. Even a dancing troop can get praise for their performance. So what.

People have indeed called out many idols for being poor singers. It’s not up to you to decide whether that criticism affects them or not.

  • Except he's objectively wrong. Lisa is like the only BP member who's been given constant praise throughout this tour and she can't sing but can dance.

but lisa's talent isn't dancing only she is a pretty decent rapper her praise is for being a good performer overall

also I can't help thinking he might not realize it but his statement seem like he is shading some members of his own group with his comment like Kai and Sehun they aren't known for their vocal technique and they are all about dancing

  • but lisa's talent isn't singing only she is a pretty decent rapper her praise is for being a good performer overall

Let’s not even. Lol. Over all exo rarely have any moments where they sound out of tune or have been called out for that.

I like how kpop fans are deflecting.

The criticism is not for everyone to sing like Chen. But the truth is idols can’t even hold a tune properly.

And if you think there’s any exo member who can’t hold a tune (which is common in kpop) you just haven’t been following kpop closely enough.

Additionally this isn’t 2014 where people can drag Kai and Sheun any which way they want.

You can listen to Sehun or Kai in any encore or any exo live and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them.

  • If you're a bad dancer, you get bullied by fans

If you're a bad singer, you get cancelled by the public.

Clearly one is more valuable here

Really? Why are you saying that? I never saw fans bullying their favs because of dancing. Do blinks bully Jisoo for not being a good dancer? I didn't know that. :woow:

I genuinely never saw fans bullying anyone for not being a good dancer.

  • Except he's objectively wrong. Lisa is like the only BP member who's been given constant praise throughout this tour and she can't sing but can dance.

Yeah a bit of talent, holding a tune from time to time and trying your best on stage can get you far in life indeed

  • I think this era of people not caring about vocals will come and go, good singers will always win in the end. This is just another passing era, people will get bored of it.

Now I am and Xiumin too are not saying every singer needs to be Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, but being a good singer is knowing how to sing. Holding a note and actually sounding listenable is what makes a you a good singer imo.

No one expects everyone to be like Chen I think that went over people's head and I think this is why many people got so defensive over what Xiumin said.

  • but lisa's talent isn't dancing only she is a pretty decent rapper her praise is for being a good performer overall

I am suprised to see some blinks out of all fandoms getting defensive over this, bp were never known and Korean Mariah Carey but many people agree they are not bad live performers. Why even bring bp into this discussion when they were never called out as suspects of this? :watt:

Also second part of the comment is brave coming from someone who stans bp but I won't get further into this. EXO has NEVER been caught lacking while singing. Literally NEVER, you can say a lot about them but you can't deny this. Even Sehun, who is often dragged by many for whatever reason, never had one bad moment, especially during encores, and never feared microphone. Kai was also never out of tune are you alright? What are you even talking about? :skull:
