A More Definitive Ranking of Artists with the Most Music Show Wins

  • ***This thread was copied over from the old forum.***

**Note that this post will be updated regularly with the latest music show win data.**

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I figured now would be a fitting time to get started.

So I’ve always taken somewhat of an interest in music show wins. Over the years, I’ve seen numerous rankings of artists with the most wins that people have created, but they never seemed quite accurate to me. Specifically, these lists often minimized the accomplishments of older artists, and failed to include data from older music shows.

Given the recent COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been spending much more time at home. As a result, I’ve had much more free time than usual, and thus decided to build my own database of music show wins, with data reaching all the way back to the 1980s. As far as I know, nothing this comprehensive has been attempted before.

My methodology was basically to incorporate as much data as I could find on Wikipedia. Wins are easy enough to locate for the current crop of music shows, but were much more difficult to uncover for older ones. In fact, many of the older music shows only had Wikipedia articles written in Korean. In addition to having to translate text from Hangul, I also had to deal with inconsistent formatting between Wikipedia articles, and thus the raw data had to be manipulated to conform to a standard arrangement. I’ve integrated full or partial data from the following music shows:

    iTV: Hot3 Big10

    JTBC: Music on Top

KBS: Bravo New Generation, Music Bank, Top 10 Songs

KMTV: Decision! Is It Popular 43, Music Triangle, Show Music Tank

    Korea MTV: MTV Countdown

    MBC Music: Show Champion

MBC: Choice Best Popular Songs, Everyone's Popular Songs, Live Music Camp, Live Young Times, Music Camp, Popular Songs Best 50, Show! Music Core, Show Network

Mnet: Gayo Best 27, M Countdown

    NTV: N-Top Inkigayo

    SBS MTV: The Show

SBS: Inkigayo, Star Seoul Star, TV Gayo 20

However, despite cataloguing over 7100 music show wins, I know my database is incomplete. There are a number of older shows for which I simply couldn’t locate complete (or any) information for. I’d appreciate it if anyone could assist with the shows below:

MBC: 무궁화 인기가요 (Mugunghwa Inkigayo) [aired from 1971-10-08 to 1971-12-24]

MBC: 금주의 인기가요 (Geumjuui Inkigayo) [aired from 1972-01-07 to 1975-10-04]

    MBC: 인기가요20 (Inkigayo 20) [aired from 1975-10-11 to 1977-03-31]

MBC: MBC 인기가요제 (MBC Inkigayoje) [aired from 1977-11-05 to 1978-04-09]

MBC: 금주의 인기가요 (Geumjuui Inkigayo) [aired from 1979-04-06 to 1981-03-11]

MBC: 인기가요 퍼레이드 (Inkigayo Parade) [aired from 1981-03-19 to 1981-09-24]

MBC: 내가 뽑은 인기가요 (Naega Ppob-Eun Inkigayo) [aired from 1983-11-04 to 1984-04-27]

KMTV: 쇼 뮤직탱크 (Show Music Tank) [need 2008 winners if they exist]

KMTV: 결정 인기가요 43 (Decision! Is It Popular 43)

    ITV: Hot3 Big10 [aired from 2001-02-05 to 2002-04-07]

Mnet: 가요베스트 27 (Gayo Best 27) [aired from 1995 to 2003]

Mnet: 가요베스트 (Gayo Best) [aired from 2003 to 2004-07-17]

Channel V: 새한 코리안 탑20 (Saehan Korean Top 20)

    NTV: N-top 인기가요 (N-top Inkigayo)

    Korea MTV: 카운트다운 (Countdown)

Please let me know of any errors or omissions. Also, solo and sub-unit wins are not stacked. A detailed breakdown of wins for any artist can be provided upon request.

Edited 85 times, last by wsoet ().

  • H.O.T won 56 times. Anyway, I don't think it makes them any less popular in Korea compared to those who have more wins.

Where did you get the 56 figure from? I have 78 wins documented for them, so that's a pretty huge discrepancy.

    It's under 가요 프로그램 1위

So I reviewed the table of wins, which was a bit of a mess in terms of consistency, and I believe the author was working off an incomplete data set. If you actually add up the number of wins listed in that table, it's actually 66, not the 55 listed in the header, so that's a red flag right off the bat.

Comparing the table with my database, I have additional 16 wins:

    12/28/1996 캔디 MBC-Popular Songs Best 50

    1/11/1997 캔디 KMTV-Show Music Tank

6/29/1997 <NA> SBS-TV Gayo 20 (Popular prize in the first half of 97)

    8/16/1997 행복 KMTV-Show Music Tank

    8/23/1997 행복 KMTV-Show Music Tank

10/7/2000 Outside Castle KMTV-Show Music Tank

10/14/2000 Outside Castle KMTV-Show Music Tank

However, at the same time, there are four wins in the Wiki article that do not appear in my database:

    Candy

    12월 29일연말결산 SBS 《[[TV 가요 20|TV가요201위

    We Are the Future

    11월8일km쇼뮤직탱크1위2주연속

    11월15일km쇼뮤직탱크1위3주연속

    빛 (Hope)

    11월 17일 KBS 《뮤직뱅크》 MVP

In the end, I can't be 100% certain that my database is correct, but I'm pretty confident that H.O.T.'s total number of wins is closer to 78 than 55/56.

  • I've updated my initial post to be current as of 2021-01-31. Highlights:

    • (G)I-dle scored 9 wins for "Hwaa", increasing their total from 18 to 27 and improving their ranking from 94th to 63rd place (tied with the likes of iKon and SG Wannabe).
  • LMAO who does this in 2021. It’s all EXO why y’all trying to erase exo achievements. Overdose is performed only as EXO since then.

Everyone knows and understands it’s all EXO. This isn’t like NCT units or EXO CBX ffs.

    This forum is like:

    Erase EXO for their achievements

Attack EXO for bad rap while they are a vocal group

Bring back EXO for fanwars with other groups

Underestimate EXO-Ls like we are no longer existing

  • LMAO who does this in 2021. It’s all EXO why y’all trying to erase exo achievements. Overdose is performed only as EXO since then.

Everyone knows and understands it’s all EXO. This isn’t like NCT units or EXO CBX ffs.

I agree that EXO-K is not like EXO-CBX, EXO-SC, or the various NCTs, since those are sub-units. EXO-K is a sub-group.

My hesitation lies in the fact that the Overdose wins were specifically for the EXO-K version of the song. That being said, I'm not opposed to including those wins. I will give it some more thought, and perhaps even seek advice from the AKP community.

    That was big jump

  • good work :claps:

I didn't think AKMU would be low on the list

So I think what's going with AKMU is that, though they are strong digitally, they are relatively weak in physical sales, views, and voting, which are all important factors going into music show wins.

    That was big jump

Indeed. In fact, it's one of the biggest jumps (maybe the biggest) I've seen during my normal two week update cycle.

  • kudos for your hard work!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

BTS broke All records related to Music Shows except 1.. The most music show wins with 1 song & that record probably would have been broken till now if Music Core & Music bank combinedly had not cancelled more than 6 weeks. But it was for Safety!!

Hoping to see more than 30 years old record to be broken in February with Dynamite as it is still #3 on every K_Chart & we gonna have million of sales with this version alone.
