blackpink paved the way for girl group's million sales

  • :mouth-zipped-raccoon:

seeing how easy girl group hitting the million recently, literally within a week we have 2 gg (RV and OMG) and also ITZY for early january, not to mention others top act like twice, aespa and ive... its safe to say that Blackpink's sales motivate other group to increase their favs sales to the point that 1 million is about to be the new standard for top group (lesserafim is coming soon)

it's because kpop is bigger now, more people buy albums of kpop

you know kpop fan is one of the most vicious in the music world right ?

there no way they help other groups increase their sale

you can say BP pave the way for BM, or BTS pave the way for HYBE group (because they are in the same company)

  • Yes they did. In sales as well as fashion. And touring records they are setting

But it is still not many ggs. Five or six ggs only. Glad to see them doing great in album sales. They are smashing in every metric

  • I agree. K-pop growth is one factor, but they were the first to hit those milestones.

    1. First few of the 3rd gen group to have insta for each of their members (and somewhat yt channel).

    2. Their crazy engagement rates, likes and yt views. MV with focus on fashionable clothes leading into fashion deals and promotion. This also influenced the 3rd gen k-pop idols to go to fashion shows blah. Not forgetting they made it prominent first.

    3. For 3rd gen, they started charting on hot100 first with several entries. Only after bts in the 3rd gen do we have it. Most groups are focused on Japan at that time but they started to target the west.

    4. Million seller was almost unprecedented for a gg in 2020 where ceilings were 500k or sth. Ppl are not realising the power they hold fr.

Do u see how after they started it gg esp 4th gen gg started following suit? They set the gc concept that some groups follow after. They made English speaking more of a serious thing to learn for promotion in the west.

No matter what these can’t be denied.

  • If we follow that logic, Blackpink was motivated by BTS selling millions of albums, I guess :/

Idt it can be equivalence here. Bts did made waves for k-pop in the west, but it doesn’t mean that gg make waves. Bp realy did it first for gg and showed it could for gg and then we have some 4th gen influenced by them. Some 3rd gen made promo in the west more prominent too.

    Once (main), Blink & Fearnot

  • Hard no. It is just natural growth of girl group sales. Everyone doesnt immediately become 5 million sellers just because BTS did it for example.

But many ggs start selling 1m after BP did it, the last time it happen before them was like 20 years ago. The same year BP sold 1m, the max a gg could get was 500k

  • Imagine thinking BP did anything for Twice when for the majority of their time they were behind Twice and I'm not changing history, this was true.

Your view of history is wrong. Nothing true there. BP has lead Twice in most areas for the majority of the last 7 years.

    Album sales power

    Twice 2016-2019

    BP 2020-Present

    Music Success (Korea)
    Twice 2016-2018
    BP 2018 - Present
Hard to say who to give 2018 to.

    International

    Twice 2016

    BP 2017-Present

You can clearly see BP ahead for the majority of the time, especially considering Twice hasn't lead them in anything in some time and the length of time BP is leading just keeps increasing every day.

BP clearly paved the way for Twice's album sales increase as well.

  • I just cant believe there are people arguing about paving the way for 1 million sales

What about BTS? They were so irrelevant that nobody wants to have 10 million sales per album like them? Why do kpop fans always have this weird idea about "paving the way"

They want to take credit for other peoples work and if they can link anything they've done to people coming after, they will do, because they see it as prestigious and it helps with their ego. It's especially prominent with blinks because 80% of the year they have nothing to do, so they take their hype and use it to say other groups are only doing as well because of them.

EXO revived the physical market and made it trendy to set album sales records. History can’t be changed.

Exo and BTS may have help BG but they didn't help GG's. SV sold their first 1m album before pandemic and BP got 1m with one single album (no rep.) Befor any NCT unit in 2020, doing double what izone and twice sold that year per album

  • But many ggs start selling 1m after BP did it, the last time it happen before them was like 20 years ago. The same year BP sold 1m, the max a gg could get was 500k

Groups like Twice in the past for example sold 300-400k for ggs but that doesnt immediately spark 4-5 groups to sell that much immediately. Same cases with EXO in the past and BTS now. Idk if kpop fans know this but "raising the bar" is also an english term.

  • Yes, all blackpink fans took pity to nugu girl groups and did a charity by buying their albums, so more GG's can become million sellers :exit-pepe:

Can't help but to troll cause the title seems like a troll thread at first, but then again it's made by a blink...

  • Ok lmao don’t erase history :skull:. This is the prob with some blinks doing that. Twice has been always selling well cb after cb. Their total sales for their cb is enough to outdo a bp album. Imagine having fans like us that is willing buy albums after albums. Plus they milked j-onces so hard during pandemic yet they still could sell well and have a strong loyal fandom. Even if the song isn’t to the liking most of us still support them.

The impact twice has on Japan is sth bp cannot achieve. Twice also has daesungs (won one over bts in a year) and lots of awards. They have the most music show wins for a gg btw.

Do u see any other gg other than new jeans or bp despite western promo or English song chart in hot100? Twice did it.

Twice don’t owe their career to bp. Their success is their own lmao. They have been successful even before bp was.

I’m only agreeing to OP in the sense that bp influenced western promo more and high fashion etc. 2021 gc year showed it. English speaking instead of Japanese focused speaking shows that as well. I think maybe pave the way is the wrong word here, but influenced. Western or intentional promo does cause a boom in k-pop sales.

  • I'm not erasing history, just unlike Once's desperately clinging to the past so hard they are exaggerating history. I'm just stating the facts.
Twice did really well for a couple years, I'm not erasing that.

"Their total sales for their comeback is enough to outdo a bp album" literally no? Twice 1.15 million vs 2.6 million for BP's most recent album.

Japan is one country. The impact BP has in Europe, Oceania, and Southeast Asia is something Twice can't achieve lmao.
Music shows are irrelevant to everyone, except Twice fans apparently. If you want to see the Korean public's take on the music Blackpink, with less than half the comebacks, has more weeks in Melon top 10 than Twice, and has more Gaon digital points.

New Jeans destroying Twice on Hot 100 with no effort really shows how Twice's 1 week on the Hot 100 at a low rank was entirely due to fans bulk digital buying. Twice still has failed repeatedly to chart with a Korean song, and it's honestly embarrassing.

Twice's early success is certainly commendable, but their recent album sales surging after flopping with their music and their comebacks not really increasing in sales is thanks to BP's influence and fans wanting to try and be competitive (even if that's failing).

    You make it too easy...

  • Idt it can be equivalence here. Bts did made waves for k-pop in the west, but it doesn’t mean that gg make waves. Bp realy did it first for gg and showed it could for gg and then we have some 4th gen influenced by them. Some 3rd gen made promo in the west more prominent too.

bts opened the market in the west for "kpop" as a whole. there's a reason this has been increasing steadily since 2017, moreso since 2020. everyone's sales are increasing, more stores are selling them and mots:7 record will probably be surpassed in the coming years by some bg with a dedicated fb in china. i got into bts and then into bp. bts's hustle in the west did a lot for kpop, bp included (yg lazy ass has been very lucky). no way these companies arent using bts numbers to convince venues and festival execs to choose kpop acts.

  • I'm not sure how 'pave the way' is meant or used by people or if different people have different meanings and interpretations of 'paving the way'.

But if as I see it often used, a group achieving something as the 1st one or breaking a record after which others follow, then there are a lot of 'pave the ways' events happening all the time, by a lot of groups?

'No more shall man have wings to bear him to paradise. Henceforth, he shall walk.'

  • Even as a blink I would say no sorry... Agreed with everyone it is just kpop becoming more popular and the inclusion of China fans helping every kpop groups now including 4th gen groups.. Also wanna note people here take this ''pave the way'' rubbish too seriously and Armedryu explained it perfectly, more like raise the bar than ''paving the way''...
