• what is it

It is a major festival for the Hindus and related religions, Different regions celebrate it for different related reasons. Mostly in India or wherever Hindus live.

The preceding period is when ancestors and spirits visit the family and then on this day, they light up the place with lamps, and crackers to show back the way home for those spirits.

And then other legends of Hindu gods defeating evil forces are commemorated.

All together become one major festival.

Even Christian missions are appropriating it as "Jesus is the light", so Deepavali or Diwali, is celebrating Jesus ^^

Though now it is getting dumbed down into yet another commercialised festival to dress up, feast and party.

  • it's no way related to Jesus as far as I know. Plus this is the one remaining festival which still holds very high religious values and still not dumbed down

  • Im going to ask my friends who celebrate Diwali about this part "Even Christian missions are appropriating it as "Jesus is the light", so Deepavali or Diwali, is celebrating Jesus"

Google is easier... Try "Jesus light diwali", there are enough results.

Your friends at best are anecdotal, limited by their subjective experiences, like all are.

Their knowing or not knowing means nothing.

And neither of your acceptance or not, to me.

Have fun.. Leave me out of it. Thanks.

  • This is most out of the blue thing I heard today lol no way christians are relating to our festival

Again use a nifty little invention called Google Web Search and try "Jesus light Diwali".

What's the suprise -inculturation i.e. appropriation mimicking other religions only to replace those gods with Jesus, has always been a strategy of Christian missionary activity.

    Nothing new.

Christmas - do you think is Christian - check again.

    Easter - Nope
