Article: "Woo Young Woo has too much feminism" vs "How is this feminism?" controversy

    1. [+1,044, -43] I've been holding back all this time and just watching it thinking it isn't too bad but the 12th episode really crossed the line... so much feminist + left wing ideas all over the episode that I just can't shield. Every case in this drama frames it as 'women and laborers are the weak' and 'men and corporations are the evil'... Anyway, I've been watching since the first episode but I have no desire at all to continue...

    2. [+852, -8] The remembrance for Park Won Soon in the 12th episode ㅋㅋㅋ that wording alone has surpassed the point of feminism. Women should actually be enraged over this right now.

    3. [+368, -7] Seems like this drama is some big feminist agenda. They framed it all through a loving actress like Park Eun Bin playing a character who is seen as weak in society and overcoming human odds through plot armor, all the while slipping feminist agendas through it all. Only now, they are being much more blatant about it after the viewers have been hooked.

    4. [+107, -9] It was fun in the first half but started getting weird towards the latter

    5. [+98, -2] The 12th episode has assured me that this is indeed a feminist drama. You can see from the first episode to the 12th that the framework has always been about depicting men as evil and women as the weak.

    6. [+80, -4] I think they went too far with the feminist themes. The CEO of both law firms are women while the antagonist or incompetent characters are always the men. And yesterday's episode ㅋㅋ totally a mix of feminist + left wing ideals where the weak in society are always meant to lose and remain poor, failing to admit that maybe the other side has just worked hard for what they've earned.

    7. [+72, -2] I had a feeling ever since I heard that Joo Hyun Young was cast in this. I'm sure everyone knows that she liked a post by a writer who is infamous for being anti-men and has written anti-men manhwas.

    8. [+46, -1] The drama started off with Woo Young Woo only to end with Kim Ji Young ㅋ

    9. [+45, -5] I guess I'm not the only one who noticed this. All of the antagonists in this drama are men.

    10. [+28, -1] ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I've been enjoying the drama but it does bother me now that I notice all these things ㅋㅋㅋ but it's just a drama in the end. Though ㅋㅋ yesterday's episode was a bit gross with how far they went ㅋㅋㅋ

    11. [+22, -1] This drama is definitely a feminist work that aims to demonize men. The writer herself has short hair and has proclaimed herself to be a feminist. Feminism is anti-men.

    12. [+26, -8] I've been noticing hints of it from the first episode but the intentions of this drama have become absolutely clear with the 12th episode ㅋㅋ it completely frames women as always just ㅋㅋ failing to realize that women in real life can be just as malicious to those they deem in theirw ay ㅋㅋ

    13. [+14, -1] Feminism isn't the issue. This drama is completely a memorial to Park Won Soon ㅋㅋ the whale that Park Won Soon set free was named Taesan ㅋ the bibimbap on the rooftop ㅋ picking up trash on the Han River ㅋ the poem read by Park Won Soon ㅋ low intelligence feminists always get caught with how obvious they make their intentions like this ㅋㅋㅋ

oh no, not the short hair :cryingr:

  • just more men feeling threatened by a female's existence :aespa16:

  • Didn't charlies angels remake got also criticized with the same way

Yup it did another film maker did a commentary criticizing the film for this exact same thing.

After watching the original and the remake and listening to the critique. They were right. There's nothing wrong with feminism or women, but the over the top stuff makes films look boring and silly and i think undermines female characters. The evil character is often always some man who is beyond comically stupid and clumsy. It's hardly ever like a normal movie where the characters are cunning smart and able to play off one another. Example of how that went was star wars they made rey into a Mary Sue. She starts off no training no ability no story and within 2secs she's an ace pilot veteran jedi and mastery of the force and wins against anything with little or no effort. Anything she does that is considered wrong she's praised for.

Compare that with the older films both anakin and luke had to go through alot of training, character development discovery trails and tribulations success and failures before becoming who they are, both failure's and success critiqued by others. But with Rey? Nope just miss perfect and everyone else is cannon fodder. This clunky idea just makes these female characters look bad by sending the message women cannot be strong and achieve without being cheated for to be ahead of the competition.

  • These guys should be fr. So what if it's a feminist drama, you're not gonna die from watching it. I haven't watched this so I can't comment on whether the fiminist themes were added naturally or not, or whether these themes even exist in the first place since some people's criteria for these things is short hair of all thing.

"Woo Youngwoo <- The name was created from 'Woong-Aeng-Woong'"

"I'm not joking, they seriously made that name from 'Woong-Aeng-Woong"

t/n: 웅앵웅 = To whine in an annoying way, the word is scene as a 'feminist' lingo by male communities because it's a slang that is often use in feminist communities to describe men in a 'hateful' way (the most used term being Hannam). It's similar to 오조오억 (Oh-Jo-Oh-Eok/ 5.5 trillion/a lot, we covered why it's "offensive" here tldr: the term comes from the expression in 5.5 trillion s*x crimes committed, there is only 1 of them that is committed by a woman. But 오조오억 can be simply used as a way to express there are many things)

    "Woo Young Woo's Oh-jo-oh-eok"

On Channel ENAD 's IG, they wrote some of the reaction/feedback from communities
the #1 reads: "There are 5.5 trillion people who are laughing and crying with Youngwoo"

    original post: here

    1. Just go die 5.5 trillion times, you guys are a waste of oxygen

    2. Fine, you guys don't have to watch itㅋㅋㅋ

    3. Wow aren't they scared to get sued...?

    4. Huh? I'm more shocked that they're even watching the drama all this timeㅋㅋㅋ

    5. The hilarious part is that they're not even trying to be lowkey about it and are straight up being shamelessㅋㅋ

    6. No but I already knew that the 🤏 emoji made them convulse with their low self-esteem, but now they're treating 5.5 trillion the same wayㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    7. I'm more wondering why they're watching the drama in the first placeㅋㅋ

    8. Meanwhile those r*tards will grow curious about the issue and end up watching the drama more

    9. Why are they making stuff up?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

    10. Wait that picture is edited?

  • Some of the comments read like they are mad that the men in the show are always portrayed as bad and incapable, whereas the women always being the victim.

People had an issue with this in other movies too. And not just men lol.

I don’t think it helps equality to make one gender appear inherently bad and stupid and the other always weak and vulnerable victims who can’t do any wrong.

That being said. I did some research why some Korean men seem to be triggered by feminist themes. I found this.

“Feminist discourse promotes hostility and fear in young Korean men because it has been misconstrued as inherently radical and misandrist.

Online communities advocating women’s rights have led to a growing misunderstanding that feminism is ubiquitous with misandry. The Korean website Megalia was founded to combat and mirror pervasive misogyny by providing an online forum where women could air similarly derogatory comments toward men. An escalating extremist culture of misandry led to the site being repeatedly shut down, with this more radical discourse gravitating to other websites and online communities. Launched in 2016, splinter site Womad features posts claiming to have committed crimes against men.

Interviewed for The Korea Times, researcher Lee Na-mi worries that the “rebound phenomenon” embodied by such websites, in retaliation to misogynistic sites such as Ilbe Storage, risks the feminist movement being “distorted and perceived wrongly.” This is echoed by Korean feminist YunKim Jiyoung, who tells Vice that “feminists are being presented as misandrists to be silenced and to have their efforts for gender equality stigmatized.” This is despite Womad’s doctrine specifying that its members do not define themselves as feminists. “

    ——————————

In other words, unlike the west and different parts of the word where feminism started as a movement to break down gender roles to create equality among the sexes, that wasn’t the case in Korea. So even with the latest wave of feminism that is going downhill and more counterproductive than helping. People remember what the term generally stands for here. But Korea didn’t had the first or second weave feminism, the term was firstly used by radical misandrist groups on the internet as a reaction to misogynistic groups. So feminist = misandrist/anti men in Korea.

There is unfortunately no distinction between actual women rights activism and femcel is if you use this word. They will throw it all into one pot. This happens when there is no proper discourse about gender related topics and more gender war going on then actually listening to each other.
