Bulk buying is what keeps K-pop afloat. We should be grateful, not hateful.

  • It's thanks to those buying multiple albums that others are able to enjoy K-pop. Just like whales in a F2P game. Without them, many active groups would be going bankrupt.

    That's the tea. :pepe-tea:

  • well I was a fan before bulk buying was that common, kpop was fine then.

They might make a lower profit margin, but they will be fine.

They could focus on other activities like more touring and live shows which we all like for more income

  • I don't like much bulk buying if you are going to send the albums to a trash can

It's a waste of resources and contributes to environmental pollution

Bulk buying digital is fine though. Companies should shift their focus to digital albums, like chinese fans do on QQ Music, you can purchase the same album 10000000x times if you want

  • Very true. Album sales for Kpop groups are so insane that plenty of A list local talent are probably jealous af lol. Selling just 1 million albums a year (only 500k per comeback which a lot of groups can do nowadays) gets you 10-20 million in gross revenue. It takes billions of Spotify streams per year to make that kind of gross revenue.

List of groups that can sell around 500k per comeback:

    Seventeen

    BTS

    EXO

    127

    Dream

    Wayv

    SKZ

    Ateez

    Boyz

    TXT
    Enhypen

    Treasure

    Super Junior

    GOT7

    Aespa

    BP

    Twice

    Red Velvet

    Lesserfrim

    Ive

    Itzy

    NMIXX

  • Yup.. I was reading a financial report for JYP.. and it said they made $10 M for the year (don't remember which year it was) for streaming for all of their groups combined across all steaming platforms. Streams don't make them much money compared to everything else..

  • Why not turn those 1 million albums in pure profit selling the, digitally? No more production costs, no more middlemen in market place either.

I would understand the concern of digital reducing the interest in albums because the albums are collectibles, but nowadays people are buying hundreds of thousands non shipping back albums... means people don't give a fuck for collecting anymore, they just want high sales to brag about on twitter

So you offer some physical albums for people who really wants to collect

And offer a digital version for people who only want to spend their money mindlessly

You just need to guarantee those digital albums will count on music shows and awards (and on Gaon/Hanteo) and boooooom, we would have a profitable and more envinronment-friendly market

  • Yeah, I've thought about that before. If they wanted to support their faves, why not buy it digitally that has a bigger margin?

But a lot has to change. You can't buy more than once on iTunes. Neither could you on Google Play Music. Nor can you on Melon, Genie, Bugs. They need to make a system that allows multiple purchases. Then Gaon also needs to starting counting digital albums. And Korean platforms also need to start selling full albums instead of only individual songs. Or Gaon can track TEA. And sales will get a big inflation because 8 tracks cost 4000 won on discount, while a digipack costs 12000 won and a standard album 16000 won. And maybe rework the digital chart to stop counting downloads.

It won't work because Korean platforms are adept of subscription models, they don't allow direct purchases. There is a vacuum in marketplace right now that doesn't allow direct purchases. Hybe released their own digital storefront on Weverse for offset this

You can add download packages to your subscription. And Bugs allow direct purchases.
