XG Faces Backlash After Their CEO's Anti-Korean Remarks

  • Newly debuted all-Japanese girl group XG is facing backlash after the group’s CEO allegedly made anti-Korean statements in an interview. Although there were rumors that the group was made in collaboration with YG Entertainment, YG Entertainment has since stated the group has no connection with them whatsoever.

The group debuted on March 18, 2022, with their single “Tippy Toes,” performing the song live for the first time on Mnet. The group has since gained an impressive following, with their YouTube channel amassing over 400K subscribers.

Despite their songs being in English, the group’s social media is in Korean, and the group promotes mainly in Korea.

XG seemed they might succeed until a recent interview with the group’s CEO Masato Matsuura came to light, sparking outrage for his anti-Korean sentiments. During an interview, the CEO emphasized that despite working with Korean producers, he was merely “using” them and rebuked the notion that XG was a K-Pop group.

    Quote
Just because we are working with Korean producers don’t mean the group is working with a Korean label.
Everyone is Japanese. It isn’t like K-Pop. It’s more like American.
I am emphatically saying everyone is Japanese.
We worked with Korean producers, but we just used Korean producers. All rights belong to Avex.
    — Matsuura Masato

The CEO then started going off on a tangent that turned the interview into a much more political one.

    Quote
Why do we have to lose to Koreans? The Japanese can do it also.
Even Koreans sent a singer like BoA to Japan to mimic us.
Since we were on the losing side, we asked to work with Korean producers, and we did it.
    — Matsuura Masato

The contents of the now-deleted interview has gone viral in Korea, with media and news outlets picking up the story. Netizens expressed their anger in a viral post that has been viewed over 158K times on one of Korea’s largest internet communities. yy-nWa-JMD9Bmy1mZ9rvWLJp2E_Pno4UtPNwL0H4JZYRzGQFf5bctOxxuwnWOnX4e4x0rNuRnXw-hV6N8Hh74h1a27OpYh_sN5emnbv66spo2A=w32-fSoften=1,100,0-rp-e365Viral post title, do you guys know all-Japanese group XG? | Nate Pann

One netizen wrote how XG played up their connection with YG, although they have none…

    Quote
They used to market themselves as YG’s rookie group but stopped when YG stated they have no connections to them, lol. This is how they attracted international K-Pop fans.
    — Netizen

Another netizen wrote the irony of XG’s CEO distancing the group from K-Pop, although all of their socials are run by Koreans.

Their Twitter is full of Korean… The fact they are trying to look like K-Pop when they want to beat Koreans is shameless and makes them look like they have no pride
  • sike

  • He really said too much. How are all of the staff Korean, but you want to act like you're better than them?

JPOP was more prominent than KPOP for years, but instead of trying to cater to international fans more, they stuck with catering to Japan's already strong music market, which is fine.

But now that KPOP has blown up, why speak so arrogantly when you're basically trying to piggy back off of KPOP's success?

  • I think since they are influenced from kpop in how they are managed, promoted, and musically, it would have been better to acknowledge that and maybe express that he admired kpop and was influenced positively and wanted to put their own unique spin based off that influence.

But instead he's making the group look bad by being disrespectful and acting like they are better than kpop groups. That's not good and you can't just promote them in Korea while doing that...

  • with all of that one funny thing is that

Koreans themselves said that NiziU ain't kpop group

but NiziU is performing at KCON's now lol (the one in SEOUL!)

KCON is obviously bigger than merely music tv show

NiziU live half of year in Korea, and film MV's in Korea, and have Korean staff as well

yet here they will complain about XG and say it's kpop group, just because fuxin Japanese CEO's said it isn't lol, and that Japanese ain't worse than Koreans

  • I like XG very much and they are gaining fans for every music shows they venture to. But at the same time I'm worried for the hate they are receiving from knetz. Avex Ceo should have shut his mouth about the Korea-Japan rivalry that it he's implying. To be honest, they should have just debuted as a Kpop, have 2-3 korean members and maybe one SEA. Last but not least, make song in korean mixed with english. He should have done like Yuehua did.

  • their social media is in English

It's a mix of both. But a lot of the members will write posts in Korean. That's what the OP is referring to I think.

Interestingly, prior before they started promoting Mascara, the girls would only write short messages in English.

  • Matsuura has been problematic for a long long time. He's the reason why Avex has declined so much in the last decade - he's lost his business sensibilities and now hurting his own artist.

I feel bad for the girls - they do not deserve this.

I am soooo tired of the KPOP vs JPOP narratives too.
