To me this song never happened 
To be honest I think SM chose rookie because they just wanted to prove that they could choose something weird at that point in RVs career and it would still capture most of their audience while also having the added benefit of capturing whoever was lingering from EARLY F(x) days.
But also I have more of a feeling that SM cycles this more recent era of GGs through the various concepts of older girl groups after debuting them with their own individual concept. Like…. Each of them debuts with their own thing…. Happiness being really the most mainstream gg debut song for a girl group from SM, then they covered a veeeeeeeery r&b song, then they released a more modern western song, then they went for a cute concept almost. All of them are still distinctly RV, but they are still obviously originally from a previous groups release history. We get RV -> SES -> RV 2.0 (rap is in now and it’s def something SM purchased, not made) -> SNSD (repeating the same noise a la “oh” and “gee” and even arguably “hoot”) -> a ballad… the grace??? -> f(x) -> do you see the pattern??
