I. INTRODUCTION

Moonshine and Valentine, also known as The Love Knot: His Excellency's First Love, is a 2018 Chinese streaming television series based on the novel Jie Ai·Yihe Fenghuan by Shi Dingrou. The series was directed by Leste Chen, and stars Victoria Song and Huang Jingyu. It aired on Tencent Video from May 9, 2018 and ended on June 13, 2018.

II. SYNOPSIS

Guan Pi Pi is an amateur reporter. In spite of being beautiful and kind, she often finds herself alone in the world. Because of that, Guan Pi Pi feels abandoned and hopeless. What she doesn’t realize is that she has been marked with an ancient curse that has been the cause of all of the misfortune in her life.

He Lan Jing Ting is the Jade Master, a secretive cultural relic specialist whose face remains unseen to the public eye. He Lan Jing Ting is practically alien to people, but no one knows just how true that statement is--The Jade Master is actually a deity from another realm.

When He Lan Jing Ting meets Guan Pi Pi, he becomes convinced that he can make her believe in love again. But for a man who lives his life in solitude, it might be tough to save a woman suffering from a supernatural, millennia-old curse.

Moonshine and Valentine received positive reviews for its high quality production, tight plot and fresh characterizations. Both leads, Song and Huang, were praised for their performance and use of original voices. The series also garnered more than 2 billion views in Tencent before the series ended.

However, the later episodes received criticism for its abrupt change in plot direction and decreased screentime of the leads. In response to this, the scriptwriter published a written apology on Weibo, asking the viewers not to blame the director and the actors for the collapse in narrative.
