  • I. Introduction

    "Monodrama" (独角戏) is a digital single from Chinese singer Lay Zhang of the boy group EXO. It is the 16th single of SM Station Season 1 and was released on May 27, 2016.


    II. Background and Release

    SM Station is a digital music project under SM Entertainment that involves solos or duets from members in existing SM groups, as well as opportunities for singers to experiment in other genres or collaborate with artists inside and outside of SM Entertainment. The project releases a number of singles digitally each year on digital platforms, including streaming audio like Spotify.


    Lay is a main dancer, sub vocalist and sub rapper in the boy group EXO, as well as a soloist. "Monodrama" was his solo debut. He co-wrote and composed the single. The song was the first Chinese song released through Station and described as an R&B song with an acoustic guitar and piano melody that expresses the emotions of a man feeling unrequited love. Lay also performed the song during EXO's EXO PLANET #3 - The EXO'rDIUM concert tour.

    VI. Reception

    The song stayed #1 on China's Billboard V chart for five consecutive weeks, breaking records. It also topped iTunes charts in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Japan and reached #2 in the U.S. and Philippines. It also reached #5 on the U.S. World songs chart and charted on the Korean Gaon charts at #155.
