I. Introduction
Milky Way is a digital single from Red Velvet as part of the SM Station Our Beloved BoA season. The singles began launching in July 2020 to celebrate BoA's 20th debut anniversary. This was the fourth single of the season, also styled Our Beloved BoA #4, and was released on August 21, 2020.
II. Background & Release
SM Station is a digital music project under SM Entertainment that involves solos or duets from members in existing SM groups, as well as opportunities for singers to experiment in other genres or collaborate with artists inside and outside of SM Entertainment. The project releases a number of singles digitally each year on digital platforms, including streaming audio like Spotify.
To celebrate BoA's 20th anniversary of our debut, a special SM Station season was created, featuring special cover versions of several of BoA's signature songs. Five songs were released over 5 weeks, including a version from SM Classics, the classical division which debuted in June 2020.
This was Red Velvet's third SM Station song as a group, although members participated independently on other songs. Additionally, Red Velvet's song "Red Flavor" was the first song to receive the orchestral treatment in the project. It was also the group's first release as a group in 2020 after member Wendy's medical hiatus due to injury.
This song was the fourth song to be released in the Our Beloved BoA season.
"Milky Way" originally appeared on BoA's third studio album, Atlantis Princess, in 2003. According to SM, the original writer, Kenzie reinterpreted the arrangement in the jazz pop genre to suit the vocals of the Red Velvet members with "a gorgeous a capella jazz scat that adds to the refreshing sensibilities suitable for summer."
A live video was released with the song on August 21.
